ESPN: Diakite has Liverpool in his sights
Jan 31st 2013, 13:51

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Lazio defender Mobido Diakite says Liverpool are his "first choice" once his contract expires with the Italian club in June.

Diakite, 25, was expected to leave the Biancocelesti this month after losing his place in Vladimir Petkovic's starting line-up.

However, now his agent believes the player will see out his current deal with Lazio before moving on this summer.

"Liverpool are our first choice for June, but there is no hurry" agent Ulisse Savini told Sky Italia. "We'll see in the next few days, however, it would be very difficult to say 'no' to a club like that."

The Anfield club may yet attempt to strike a cut-price deal for the French-born player, given he is so out of favour with the Serie A outfit.

Diakite has been with the Rome-based club for six years, following a €300,000 switch from Pescara back in 2006. He has made almost 100 appearances for Lazio and was a vital part of their 2009 Coppa Italia-winning side, but has played just one game under Petkovic this season.

Sky Sports: Liverpool first option for Diakite

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are the favoured option for Lazio defender Modibo Diakite as he considers a move away from Italy.

The French centre-back has been at Lazio since 2006 but is out of contract in the summer and considering his options.

The 25-year-old's agent Ulisse Savini claims Liverpool is the most likely destination for his client but admits there is no rush to do a deal.

"Liverpool is our first option for June," Savini told tuttomercatoweb.com.

"It's in issue in progress and we have to talk yet.

"Everyone knows that the contract is expiring. Also, Lazio know there is no hurry.

"We'll see in the coming days. However, it would be hard to say no to Liverpool."

Clubcall: Ince deal unlikely
Jan 31st 2013, 09:09

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that a deal to sign Blackpool winger Tom Ince is unlikely to go through before the window shuts.

The Reds have been chasing their former player for most of the month but Rodgers has admitted that a deal is now unlikely to go through because of the price and complications.

Rodgers has not ruled out making a move for Ince some time in the future but for now the deal is off.

"Ince was one where we could have made a deal but it looks like it's a bit complicated," he said. "I don't think there will be any more coming in now."

"It will be difficult [to sign Ince]. It is also about affordability as well.

"If Tom stays at Blackpool it doesn't mean he will never come to Liverpool but in this window it looks like it will be a difficult one."

BBC: Ince unlikely to join Liverpool
Jan 31st 2013, 09:03

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Blackpool winger Tom Ince is unlikely to join Liverpool before the transfer window closes, says Reds manager Brendan Rodgers.

The former Liverpool schoolboy, 21, has been linked with a return to Anfield.

But after completing an £8.5m move for Inter Milan's Philippe Coutinho, Rodgers admitted that could be it.

"Ince was one where we could have made a deal but it looks like it's a bit complicated," he said. "I don't think there will be any more coming in now."

Speaking after the 2-2 draw at Arsenal, Rodgers added: "It will be difficult [to sign Ince]. It is also about affordability as well.

"If Tom stays at Blackpool it doesn't mean he will never come to Liverpool but in this window it looks like it will be a difficult one."

Reading manager Brian McDermott, whose Royals have made an offer for Ince, was even more emphatic about the England Under-21s player's immediate future when questioned on Tuesday.

"We might have one more possible deal tomorrow but it won't be Thomas Ince," he said. "I think he will be staying at Blackpool."

Liverpool boss Rodgers emphasised how pleased he was to have secured the services of 20-year-old Brazil international Coutinho just hours before transfer deadline day.

"We've had a great window by bringing in Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

"We're delighted to have got Coutinho. I love players who can make a difference at the top end of the field and he can. I have known him since he was 15 coming through in Brazil.

"He is a wonderful talent and a great technician with pace and power. He is flexible and in midfield he can play in that central zone or off the sides.

"The owners have been brilliant and very supportive. Daniel Sturridge has been absolutely fantastic for us since coming in and with Coutinho arriving we have another young player who has also got great experience.

"It is a real coup for us because Inter Milan did not want to sell him but he wanted to come here."

"Liverpool are our first choice," said the agent of Lazio defender Modibo Diakite, although only on a free transfer in June.

The 25-year-old centre-back has only made one Coppa Italia appearance this season due to a contract dispute, as he has refused to sign an extension and turned down several transfer opportunities.

"Liverpool are our first choice for June," declared agent Ulisse Savini.

"It would be very difficult to say no to a club like that."

Diakite has also been linked with Juventus in recent weeks and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Telegraph: Butland could be sold
Jan 30th 2013, 11:23

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Birmingham City are facing the prospect of selling Jack Butland on transfer deadline day, with Chelsea set to make a £3million bid.

Chelsea have made a firm enquiry for the England international goalkeeper and will battle Liverpool and Fulham in a chase that is likely to go into the final hours of Thursday.

Butland's fee has been significantly reduced only seven months after Birmingham rejected £6million from Southampton.

The Championship club fear they could be forced into selling at a low price, to avoid the threat of administration.

However, Chelsea could face difficulty convincing Butland that a move to Stamford Bridge is the sensible next step in his career.

That could leave Fulham as favourites to complete a deal, as current No.1 Mark Schwarzer is out of contract in the summer.

Sky Sports: Zarate on Reds' radar
Jan 30th 2013, 09:54

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Sky Sports understands that a number of Premier League sides are keen on bringing Lazio striker Mauro Zarate back to England.

Zarate enjoyed a productive loan spell at Birmingham in 2008, with his efforts at St Andrew's helping to earn him a move to Italy.

The Argentine frontman made a bright start to life in Serie A, but has struggled for goals of late.

Lazio are keen to move him on, freeing up funds and space in their squad.

At the age of 25 there is still plenty of football left in Zarate and a move to England could help to reignite his career.

The likes of Sunderland, Stoke and Liverpool are all said to have cast an eye in Zarate's direction.

Liverpool are in the race to sign Lazio forward Mauro Zarate.

The 25-year-old Argentine has been on the fringes of the Lazio first team this season, managing only one Serie A appearance.

Zarate is known to English football fans, having enjoyed a successful loan spell at Birmingham in 2008.

But Liverpool have a battle on their hands, with Sunderland and Stoke believed to be keen on him too.

Sunderland in particular are looking to add more firepower up front, and appear to be closing in on a move for Swansea City's Danny Graham.

And Lazio could well part company with Zarate, as they want to free up funds and space in their squad.

Zarate is yet to get off the mark for Lazio this season.

Inter forward Philippe Coutinho has completed his medical at Liverpool and is expected to confirm the move within hours.

The Brazilian playmaker is set to sign for the Premier League in a deal worth around €12m, with Sky Sport Italia confirming that his medical examination has been a success.

The Brazil international has made just 47 appearances for the club, scoring five goals.

Mirror: Coutinho set to complete move
Jan 29th 2013, 11:38

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Philippe Coutinho is expected to be confirmed as Brendan Rodgers' second signing of the January transfer window inside the next 24 hours.

Coutinho was due to have his medical today on Merseyside after Liverpool agreed his £8.5million fee with Inter Milan.

The Brazilian midfielder will travel to London with club officials after undergoing his medical to obtain a work permit.

The Reds hope Coutinho's application will be successful without having to appeal, even though he has made just the solitary appearance for Brazil.

Inter chief Massimo Moratti gave his blessing to the move last week. He told inter.it: "There are opportunities there to be seized. Sometimes certain players need the chance to play more.

"And that's why I think this could be a great opportunity for a Coutinho, and a deal that could go very well for us too."

Coutinho came through the youth system at Vasco da Gama before joining Inter at the age of 16.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Espanyol, where he worked with new Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino's recent appointment at Saints led to speculation linking him with the south coast club but Coutinho is now set for Anfield.

Echo: Coutinho set for medical
Jan 29th 2013, 10:24

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Philippe Coutinho will undergo his medical today as Liverpool FC edge closer to completing the £8.5million signing of the Inter Milan midfielder.

The 20-year-old Brazil international, who arrived on Merseyside yesterday afternoon, will then travel to London with club representatives in the hope of securing a work permit.

Coutinho doesn't automatically qualify as he only has one cap but Liverpool are confident a permit will be granted.

An answer is expected from the Home Office either later today or tomorrow. If the request is initially turned down then Liverpool will be able to appeal and argue their case at a personal hearing.

Reds officials don't envisage any problems and Coutinho's arrival should be officially announced by Liverpool in the next 24 hours.

Express: Coutinho given blessing for move
Jan 28th 2013, 17:40

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have been given a significant boost as they look to complete a deal for Inter Milan's Philippe Coutinho.

The Reds are believed to have had a £10.2m bid for the Brazilian accepted last week, with the player due to have his medical in Merseyside this week.

Coutinho has been tracked by Liverpool for a while now, who was also the subject of interest from fellow Premier League outfit Southampton.

And now Coutinho, who is edging closer to a move to Anfield, has been given the thumbs up by Inter president Massimo Moratti, who feels the deal could benefit both clubs.

He said: "There are opportunities that must be taken and at times players can have the chance to get more playing time.

"This is why I think this English move could be a great opportunity for Coutinho and a deal that would be good for us too."

Coutinho's sale is believed to be necessary for Inter in their bid to land Paulinho, who had been linked with a move to Chelsea this window.

Coutinho has scored two goals in all competitions for Inter this season.

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Brendan Rodgers may not be done with the January transfer window just yet, after agreeing a fee of Inter Milan's Philippe Coutinho Liverpool may move for Tottenham Hotspur's young midfielder Alex Pritchard.

News that Lewis Holtby is on his way from Schalke may be enough to give Liverpool the upper hand in talking with the attacking midfielder who has yet to make his debut for Spurs.

Pritchard has been at the centre of Spurs' impressive NextGen development team over the last year and was reported to have caught the eye of Real Madrid and Barcelona scouts his performances in November.

The Merseysiders are now plotting a move for the player with former Spurs' youth coach and current Liverpool reserve team coach Alex Inglethorpe keeping an interest in the 19-year-old.

Pritchard's contract with Spurs is nearing an end and although he will be offered an extension it is reported that he wishes to keep his options open giving Inglethorpe and Rodgers a chance to convince him that his future may be best away from White Hart Lane.

The youngster is yet to make his full debut at Spurs but was called up to the first team squad for last year's Europa League.

Mail: Benteke on Reds radar
Jan 27th 2013, 10:44

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Aston Villa's season could get even worse as some of the Premier League's top clubs are showing an interest in their prized asset Christian Benteke.

Champions Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal have all had their interests piqued by the Belgian's impressive start to his Premier League career.

Benteke has already scored 11 goals for the club so far, and his fine form has not gone unnoticed.

Paul Lambert might be resigned to losing Benteke should the Premier League strugglers go down, but the Scot may be fighting a losing battle to hold on to the 22-year-old even if Villa stay up.

Spurs have shown the strongest interest in the striker, but he is extremely unlikely to leave the club before the January transfer window closes on Thursday, according to the Mirror.

Benteke is determined to help Lambert, who signed him for £7.5million from Genk, avoid the drop.

Villa fans will be concerned given the history of owner Randy Lerner when it comes to the club's top players. He has cashed in on the likes of Ashley Young, Stewart Downing, James Milner and Gareth Barry in recent years.

Benteke signed a four-year contract last summer and has been favoured - alongside the promising Andreas Weimann - ahead of Darren Bent.

Benteke, who grew up as an Arsenal fan, signed a four-year contract at Villa Park last summer after being watched by Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.

Mail: Reds face Ince competition
Jan 27th 2013, 10:36

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Reading are preparing to pip Liverpool to long-term transfer target Thomas Ince.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has been trying to land the Blackpool forward for some time, but Reading have also emerged as candidates for the 20-year-old's signature due to their willingness to meet Ince's £8million asking price.

Liverpool had been hoping to land Ince, who left Anfield in 2011 for £250,000, for almost half of Reading's proposed bid.

Ince reached 15 goals for the season having scored a double in Blackpool's victory over Wolves yesterday, and Liverpool were confident of recapturing their former player for as little as £4.5million.

But it now appears they will have to improve that offer given the competition. The Royals had been trailing Andrey Arshavin, but the club's Russian owner Anton Zingarevich has now turned his attention away from his countryman towards England Under 21 star Ince, according to the Sunday People.

Reading manager Brian McDermott is keen to add some weight to his attack to secure the relegation strugglers another season in the English top flight.

Clubcall: Deal inches closer for Brazilian
Jan 28th 2013, 09:21

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti believes a move to Liverpool will be beneficial for midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

The two sides are in talks over a move for the 20-year-old and the hope is an agreement will have been reached before the transfer window closes on Thursday night.

The Brazilian has found first-team opportunities hard to come by in Italy and a move to Anfield looks to be on the cards, with unconfirmed reports in Italy claiming he was on his way to the Reds on Monday for a medical.

"There are certain opportunities that should be taken," Moratti said.

"Sometimes players are able to get more playing time, and so I think it could be a great opportunity for Coutinho and a deal that might work out well for us."

The two sides have yet to agree a fee, with Inter looking for around £10m so they can spend it on their own targets and Liverpool said to be offering £8m.
