talkSPORT: Liverpool still in Bony hunt

Liverpool and West Ham will have the chance to bid for Wilfried Bony at the end of the season after the striker failed to secure a switch to Russia.

The free-scoring Ivorian has signalled his desire to leave Vitesse Arnhem and had hinted he would look to move to one of Russia's top sides this month.

However, the Russian transfer window closed on Tuesday night and no clubs made an offer for him - meaning West Ham and Liverpool are free to reprise their interest in the summer.

Vitesse interim director Erwin Kasakowski believes the forward will complete the season in Holland - although clubs in Ukraine could look to snap him up before their window slams shut on Friday.

Kasakowski told Dutch newspaper AD: "No club in Russia came to us with an offer, so Wilfried will finish the season at Vitesse."

Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal are keeping close tabs on Galatasaray striker Burak Yilmaz.

Also Talksport, published a recent report which claimed Alex Ferguson was impressed with the Turkish international strikers performance against Manchester United in the Champions League group stages.

Burak scored against United when they met in November and has gone onto score seven goals in seven European appearances.

The 27-year-old striker is the leading scorer in the competition along with Cristiano Ronaldo and his goals to minutes and shot ratio is marginally better.

Burak has only played 591 minutes and taken 16 shots on target - Ronaldo has played 630 minutes and taken 31 shots on target.

Speaking before training today, Burak told Radyospor, "It's an honour to be associated with such club.

"However, all that's on my mind is providing for my team and working together with my teammates to achieve our goals."

Domestically Burak has scored 62 goals in his last 71 league games including 14 goals in 19 games this season and also has the highest number of assists for the Lions (6).

Burak was signed by Galatasaray for €5 million last summer from Trabzonspor.

Telegraph: Liverpool step up quest for new Gerrard
Feb 28th 2013, 09:47

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Brendan Rodgers stands before Anfield's next generation. They are the teenagers hoping to succeed Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher as the heart and soul of Liverpool Football Club. Maybe they are expecting a pat on the back, a congratulations or gentle massaging of the ego. Instead, Rodgers' message is forthright.

"You may think you play for Liverpool," he remarks. "Let me tell you now. You don't. Until you play regularly for the first team, you are not a Liverpool player player and you should not say you are a Liverpool player. If anyone ever asks you, all you should say is one day you hope to play for Liverpool."

There is a brief hush around the Tom Saunders Lecture Theatre at the club's academy in Kirkby, long enough for that particular sentiment to register. For the next 40 minutes, Rodgers spells out the particular demands and sacrifices required, as the manager puts it, "to do what it takes".

"Do you want to live the footballers' life or live the life of a footballer?" Rodgers asks, before warning of the perils of pursuing sports cars and celebrity parties ahead of sporting excellence. This is an insight into football's greatest fear in the modern age, where promising adolescents become millionaires before they have played 30 games. The world at their feet at 17, washed up at 21.

Liverpool urgently need to reverse a worrying trend since their academy was built 14 years ago. For many Premier League clubs, discovering and nurturing local talent is an aspiration. At Anfield, it is an obligation. Carragher retires this summer. Gerrard is 32 and asking himself how long he has left. Those two embody the current Liverpool. Someone has to redefine it when they are gone.

"It's important for identity and this club is about identity," says Rodgers. "All I want is good players, whether they are from Liverpool, Spain or Ireland, but I also inherently believe if you have someone from this area you will get that extra passion because this is their club. You want those from your own family with you.

"Carra and Stevie would have always got to where they are. You need good people to help you get there quicker, but it's always the players' responsibility. Everyone here needs to understand the dirty work to get there."

The senior coaches and players have spent the day coaching at The Academy. It may seem nothing especially unusual, first team staff taking time to underline the requirements to those coming through. In a turbulent recent history at Liverpool, it is unprecedented.

Luis Suárez and Gerrard are playing five-a-side with the eight-year-olds, the Liverpool captain hosting a question-and-answer session of his own. Pepe Reina is trying to stop the ambitious under-12s beating him in a penalty shoot-out.

Every other first-team player is involved at some level on site, joining in the small-sided games with each of 198 of the academy playing staff aged eight to 21, and embracing a mentoring programme Rodgers is pushing.

"We've never done anything like this before," Carragher observes, his son among those enjoying the coaching sessions with the likes of Gerrard and Suárez.

The manager also spoke at length to parents to offer a reminder that whatever issues they encounter as they seek the best for their son they should approach him or his staff. Such is the inclusiveness he is encouraging, last week he arranged for under-14 players to be ballboys in the Europa League game against Zenit St Petersburg.

"We were meant to be in Dubai having a break this week," says Rodgers. "I cancelled it after we lost to Oldham and told the players we were coming here instead. I couldn't get it out of my mind the idea of players walking around Dubai after we had gone out of the Cup. I said 'no'. You have to earn those rewards. This is more important."

It was not so long ago different areas of this football club were perceived as factions rather than departments. Liverpool's academy was the first purpose-built facility of its type in 1999, the aim then precisely as of now - to maintain a conveyor belt that produced Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Steve McManaman and Carragher.

There have been an assortment of good professionals who have come through since, but nothing comparable to the 'centre of excellence' crop who pre-dated the move to Kirkby. Even Gerrard had barely spent time here before being summoned to Melwood.

It is a moment of symbolism when the current academy director, Frank McParland, introduces Rodgers to his development squad as 'the boss'. During the Gérard Houllier era and most of Rafael Benítez's reign, there was only friction. They would go years without stepping into the place, no deference considered necessary from the academy director to the manager. Those who worked under successive regimes do not only see a different relationship, but a different club.

"We are one club compared to what it was then," says McParland, who took on his role in 2009. "There are clear lines of communication. The relationship offers the players a pathway. It's the best time there has been in terms of that relationship."

This season, the edict was issued that from the under-nines up, the fluid, passing style and formation of the first team was to be replicated.

"When I came in I sold the owners that idea so that if it doesn't work out for me, at least you bring in a different manager who wants to play the same style and then it evolves," says Rodgers. "I want to create a shortcut so that everyone who comes in immediately understands what is expected in terms of style of play. It saves time, money and effort. This is the first year of that and, naturally, there are growing pains.

"The alternative is you have no plan. You start one way, that doesn't work so you bring in another manager who wants it completely different. Half your squad plays one way, the other half another. All you get then is stockpiling of players. Then it's the club's fault if you're not successful, not the players.

"The ideal is to bring us all together on one site. The environment here is terrific, but ultimately I've already advocated to the board the benefits of bringing us all together. If I'm here a long time, that's what I want to see happen."

Liverpool's last flurry of world-class youth products emerged in the mid-90s before that separation. McParland was a community coach in those days, promoted in the final year of Benítez's reign working alongside academy technical director Rodolfo Borrell, who was recruited from Barcelona's famed La Masia Academy. The network of scouts is spread across South America as much as Speke nowadays. The aspiration is to recruit the finest global talent while keeping the Scouse heart beating.

"There will be a number of top, Liverpool-born players coming through in the next five years. I will say that for definite," says McParland. "We've done well getting some through recently, but I don't think you say they're proper Liverpool players until they played 100 first-team games. I think we're doing alright, but there is no massive success until you get a situation where they're playing every week and the boss can't drop them.

"We have a massive network of scouts working for us - impossible to put a number on it because we have contacts everywhere but you have to remember we also have to look beyond Merseyside. We want the best of the best, not just from this area, but from London and Lisbon. But we also want that team of Carraghers the crowd sings about. That genuinely is the aspiration."

One theory is Liverpool, just like Manchester United, simply enjoyed a golden period in the mid-90s it is impossible to replicate. Look around the league, even across the continent, and few of the elite clubs are packed with academy talent.

"Throughout Europe it's a small percentage of under-21 players in the first team," says Rodgers. "The recurring question is whether those top players are a product of nature or nurture? There are some you see straight away and you know they'll be a player, and then others who haven't got quite everything but they will fight to be the best they can be. You want both."

Borrell spent 13 years at Barcelona, Lionel Messi among the most prodigious talents he oversaw.

"Some players are born to this, but not many," he says. "Messi, Dalglish, Cruyff and Gerrard are rare. The type of game in Spain makes it easier to produce a certain profile of player, but England has other qualities. The football here is not better or worse, just different and English football is creating better facilities and a structure which can only be positive for the future.

"We are always comparing players, but I won't say we will have a new Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. To find another Gerrard or Carragher is difficult. I want a player with his own name, making his own impact and I'm sure that will happen."

Rodgers concludes his speech to the development squad, some of who have already enjoyed a taste of the senior action. He tells them to honour and learn from their predecessors, but to strive to ensure the perennial quest to find the next 'big thing' from Anfield ends with them.

"The past is incredible but we can't be hostages to that," says Rodgers. "Don't be one of those sitting in the pub at 55 blaming everyone else saying how you could have been this or that. It is down to you to learn from Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. It is down to you to make it happen."

Telegraph: Life of a Liverpool prospect
Feb 28th 2013, 09:52

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Ask anyone connected to Liverpool for the last decade what separates Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher from the rest, and it is not just their talent.

It is their humility and connection with the community. If there is a recurring theme from the day of 'integration' between the senior and junior ranks, it is impressing on academy graduates there is more to being a Premier League player than just being a great footballer.

In the past, boot cleaning and dressing room sweeping used to be the rite of passage for apprentices needing to know their place. Many lament the passing of such an age, but Liverpool's Academy staff reject the image of emerging youngsters as too pampered. Cooking, bricklaying and car mechanics are part of the ritual now.

Right-back Ryan McLaughlin, an 18-year-old Northern Irish youth player who has already had a taste of the first team on last year's North American tour, understands why supporters think emerging youngsters are living in a bubble. He is also reassuringly honest about how to alter misconceptions.

"The manager has made it clear it's not about cars and money. It's about going out in front of 40,000 people and winning games and trophies," he says. "We're taught that every day. It's needed as well. You do see people go off the rails, more interested in the party life, but we're taught humility and how to keep away from complications.

"We have to appreciate how lucky we are, and that keeps us humble. This week we've gone to Alder Hey Children's Hospital and to the homeless shelter to help out there. That's something the club always wants us to be involved with.

"There is an emphasis on other life skills. We'll have cooking lessons so we can look after ourselves, or we'll have people teaching us how to replace a flat tyre. Day-to-day stuff you need to know.

"We all know we have this brilliant opportunity, we haven't done anything at all. Some people have been here in the past and fallen out of football completely at a young age."

Phil Roscoe, the Assistant Academy manager and head of educational welfare, says clubs have a responsibility to not only advise youngsters of the pitfalls of fame, but also assist those whose dreams go unfulfilled.

"Society has changed and the clubs have to deal with that," he says. "The lads now are different to ten years ago, and they will be different again in another ten years. It's hard for them because they are told what they should do by us, but there will also be their mates saying 'come out and spend some of that money'. It's not easy when you get those pressures.

"The biggest thing here now is everyone is in agreement what needs to be done and how to do it. We have complete support. If you don't have that cohesion, it won't work. I've been in situations where one staff member would advise one thing and another the opposite. It's not like that here."

The Academy's Education and Welfare Officer, Clive Cook, agrees. "There is a perception the boys have it easy, but I can assure you they don't," he says. "If they don't progress, they get released and that can be very difficult for any young person to deal with.

"What we want is well-rounded people, some of who will go on to achieve football success but others who might be successful at another club or in an another field.

"We can warn them about the distractions, but we know it's difficult. The real mates will be the ones who say 'don't go out tonight, stay in and make sure you're right for that game you've got coming up'."

The images of Liverpool's most famous sons are everywhere here, not least the giant canvas of a youthful Gerrard on a 'wall of fame'.

"I'm not thinking about it in terms of replacing any of those great players," says McLaughlin.

"The Scousers here know more about the traditions of who has come through, which may add some pressure, but we can all take encouragement from the knowledge Gerrard and Carragher went through the same process that we're now going through. We know what's possible if we do everything we can to achieve it."

Newcastle United may face another battle to hold onto one of their players after Liverpool targeted midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa as a possible summer recruit.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his wide options for next season, and has identified the French international as a suitable addition.

According to a report on Spanish transfer website fichajes.net, Ben Arfa could be the subject of a £20m bid from the Reds, and is open to the idea of moving to Anfield.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be loathe to lose another key member of his squad - after Demba Ba's £7.5m switch to Chelsea in January - especially given Ben Arfa has missed large parts of this season through injury.

But with the Magpies set to enquire again about bringing back Liverpool misfit Andy Carroll to St James' Park this summer, Ben Arfa could be used by Pardew as a possible makeweight.

PSG are also thought to be interested in the former Marseille talent, who recently admitted it would be 'a dream' to play for the Ligue 1 leaders.

Ben Arfa could choose to stay at Newcastle however, with the club who paid a total transfer fee of around £7m for his services rumoured to be preparing an offer of a new long-term contract.

The 25-year-old has made just 14 appearances this season, the last coming during the North East club's 2-1 defeat to Fulham in December.

Liverpool have been alerted to the availability of Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay after Schalke revealed they will not look to extend the 26-year-old's current season-long loan deal.

Talksport have reported that the German club's sporting director, Horst Heldt, has confirmed Afellay will return to parent club Barcelona at the end of the season, and the Catalan giants will again try to offload the Dutchman, who is deemed surplus to requirements in Spain.

Liverpool are believed to be most eager to bring Afellay to the Premier League, but Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are also interested.

Afellay has had limited first-team chances at Barcelona since his £2m move from PSV Eindhoven in 2010, having only made 33 appearances across three seasons at the Nou Camp.

The winger was loaned to Bundesliga side Schalke at the beginning of this campaign and has racked up 15 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals.

Afellay, who has 44 caps for the Netherlands, has not featured since November because of injury problems, including a torn thigh muscle that has kept him on the sidelines for the past two months.

Were he to join Liverpool, the Dutchman would fight for first-team chances alongside a plethora of talent, with Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Stewart Downing, Fabio Borini and Suso all available to Anfield chief Brendan Rodgers.

Ibrahim Afellay could finally arrive in the Premier League after Schalke's sporting director Horst Heldt revealed the club aren't looking to extend his season long loan.

The Dutch midfielder is still under contract at Barcelona but prior to his loan move, he was deemed surplus to requirements and it is unlikely that anything has changed.

Prior to his move to Germany, there was interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham for the 26-year-old.

All three clubs are expected to revive their interest.

Mail: Carra - Messi and Ronaldo drive each other on
Feb 26th 2013, 09:20

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

By Jamie Carragher

They are the best players in the world but they will never be best friends. When Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi go head-to-head on Tuesday night, there will be a brief acknowledgement but nothing else.

Really, though, they should go out of their way to thank each other. Every time Ronaldo sparkles for Real Madrid, Messi inevitably tries to go one better for Barcelona.

The results have been spectacular and it means Spanish football is now essential viewing.

But watch them in the second leg of the Copa Del Rey semi-final - and again on Saturday in la Liga - and you will see nothing more than a cursory handshake. You don't need to be a body language expert to appreciate there is no love lost between these two.

The question both men should be asking, however, is this: where would I be without you?

You have to question whether their statistics would be so incredible if one was playing in another league. When Ronaldo scored a hat-trick last month against Getafe, Messi scored four the night after against Osasuna.

All that was missing from his performance was him lifting his shirt to reveal the message 'anything you can do, I can do better.'

Messi has always been a top player and is surrounded by magicians in Xavi and Andres Iniesta but you can argue that Ronaldo's £80million move from Manchester United in 2009 took his game to another level.

Statistics back that up. If you look at a breakdown of how Messi has reached 300 goals, the first 80 came in 161 games. In the 204 matches he has played since Ronaldo arrived at the Bernabeu, Messi has rattled in 221, as if to hammer home the point he is the best in the world.

Ronaldo, of course, would never acknowledge that nor would he say that trying to outwit Messi has taken his game to another level - he scored 118 goals for Manchester United in 292 appearances but, for Madrid, his tally is 183 goals in 182 matches.

His enmity towards Messi really surfaced last summer at Euro 2012, when Denmark fans barracked him during a game against Portugal, chanting 'Messi!' every time he got possession.

'You know where he was this time last year,' Ronaldo asked after the game. 'Being eliminated from the Copa America. In his own country. That is worse, no?'

Further proof arrived via the voting for the Ballon D'Or, which Messi won for a fourth time recently. As captain of Argentina, Messi was given a vote and his top three choices were Iniesta, Xavi and Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, also got the chance to vote, as he is captain of Portugal. Yet he turned down the chance and handed responsibility to his deputy Bruno Alves. Unsurprisingly, Alves picked Ronaldo as his number one and left Messi off his shortlist.

Of course, rivalry in sport is nothing new. Look at Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett. Would Coe have won the 1500metres gold medal in Moscow in 1980, had he not been beaten six days earlier by Ovett in the 800metres?

The intense competition between those two was the reason there was a golden age for British athletics in the 1980s and I read that Coe cited his rivalry with Ovett as the reason he broke three world records in the space of 41 days in 1980.

Similarly, there was no affection between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost when they dominated Formula One. Would they have enjoyed so many podium finishes without the other pursuing them?

Senna, after all, was known as a risk taker because Prost kept pushing him.The tragic footnote to that rivalry came when Senna was killed in 1994 and Prost said that 'part of him also died' with Senna.

They had no allegiance on the track but the respect Prost had for Senna was shown when he was one of the pallbearers at his funeral.

It is all about appreciation and recognition. Victoria Pendleton and Anna Mears, the top women cyclists, had a feud that lasted years but melted in a second when they embraced at the end of a sprint, which Mears won, at the Olympics last summer.

That was two athletes realising the role they had played in each other's career, a fitting way to bring the curtain down on their rivalry.

Will that happen with Ronaldo and Messi? Unlikely. Ronaldo was pictured with a face like thunder when Messi was presented with the Ballon D'Or. Messi, on the other hand, has not once said in public how good Ronaldo.

They emit mutual loathing rather than mutual respect.Should that stay the same way, it would be a huge shame. Both men have fantastic team-mates and have enjoyed the backing of brilliant managers but they should also appreciate their private competition is making them play better, possibly better than they could ever have dreamed.

So while they might not be able to live with each other one thing is certain - they cannot be without each other, either.

Newcastle want Hatem Ben Arfa to sign a new contract - to keep him away from Liverpool's clutches.

Toon boss Alan Pardew has been sounded out by Kop chief Brendan Rodgers about his French star, but does not want to do business.

Now Ben Arfa, who is coming back from a lengthy injury lay-off, is due to sort out new terms to bump up his salary and tie him down for his peak years.

The 25-year-old has been a stand-out for the Geordies when fit and his problems this season have come at the same time as the club's slide down the table.

Pardew wants to keep Ben Arfa sweet after signing so many of his fellow countrymen, some on big pay days, so an extension is on the cards.

Rodgers has been looking at the midfielder as an Anfield target but the fee would be a problem.

And with so many similar players in his squad it would be a luxury capture.

Hatem Ben Arfa is under increasing pressure to sign a new contract at St James' Park amid interest from Liverpool, the Daily Mirror reports.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is a keen admirer of the 25-year-old and has made enquiries about securing his services in the off-season.

But Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has no intention of letting the player leave Tyneside and, now that Ben Arfa is beginning to return from a long injury lay-off, is pushing for the club to tie the Frenchman to a new and improved contract.

Rodgers has also begun his search for a replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher, with reports suggesting Rodgers is keeping a close eye on Feyenoord youngster Stefan de Vrij.

According to the Daily Mail, the 21-year-old Netherlands international has been a target for Rodgers for some time, but with Carragher's impending departure, the 40-year-old has stepped up his interest, even flying to Rotterdam to watch De Vrij captain Feyenoord to victory over PSV Eindhoven.

However, Liverpool are not the only Premier League side interested in the central defender, with Newcastle scouts also spotted amongst the Rotterdam crowd.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was in Holland on Sunday to run the rule over Feyenoord captain Stefan De Vrij.

The 21-year-old Holland international has caught they eye and has apparently been on the radar of Rodgers for the past few months, so he took the opportunity of a rare weekend off to run the rule over the player on Sunday.

Rodgers was not the only one watching him in Feyenoord's win over PSV as Scouts from Newcastle were also in the crowd.

De Vrij has 18 months left on his current contract and his value will decrease as that contract comes to a close so Rodgers, who is looking to replace the retiring Jamie Carragher, is considering a summer move.

talkSPORT: Juve join Liverpool in Sanchez chase
Feb 25th 2013, 14:11

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool target Alexis Sanchez is being chased by Italian champions Juventus.

The Barcelona forward has made 17 league appearances in Spain this season - but only nine of those have been starts.

The 24-year-old has scored just one La Liga goal, making him Barca's least prolific forward behind Lionel Messi, David Villa, Tello and Pedro, and could now be on his way out of the Nou Camp.

Juventus believe they will steal a march on their rivals in the chase for the forward's signature as they have his international teammate and friend Arturo Vidal currently in their squad.

When Vidal moved to Juve in 2011 it was Sanchez, then a burgeoning star at Udinese, who helped the midfielder settle in Italy and Juve boss Antonio Conte now hopes that bond can be re-established.

Brendan Rodgers' close ties to Barcelona, formed when the Liverpool boss spent time in Catalonia studying their training methods and infrastructure, made him a frontrunner for Sanchez but Juve will now hope to pip the Anfield club and seal the deal.

Mail: Reds target in Reading discussions

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Reading manager Brian McDermott has rubbished suggestions he has frozen Alex Pearce out amid uncertainty over the defender's future at the Madejski Stadium.

Pearce's contract runs out at the end of the season and while he has been offered a new deal he is yet to commit. Liverpool have expressed interest in the centre-back as they look to replace the retiring Jamie Carragher.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international was left out of the starting line-up for the second straight game in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at home to relegation rivals Wigan.

A frustrated McDermott has previously described Pearce's situation as 'the longest negotiations in my life', but today denied reports he had lost patience with his defender.

"The contract does not come into it at all," he told Reading FC Player.

"Obviously I'm frustrated with the contract situation, it's a good offer, he's got to make his mind up.

"He says he wants to stay and play for me, he has to make his own mind up on that."

McDermott claimed he had dropped Pearce because of his performance in a 2-1 defeat to Stoke a fortnight ago.

Since then Sean Morrison has been preferred and impressed in the FA Cup defeat at Manchester United to keep his place at the weekend.

"I thought Morrison was excellent against United and it was just a personnel decision," McDermott said. "You live and die by that.

"I spoke to Pearcey on Friday, I said to him he needs to do better (for both goals against Stoke).

"He had to do better picking up Robert Huth for the set play and then when (Cameron) Jerome turned him for the second goal. He accepted that."

Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham are hoping to go double Dutch this summer.

The three clubs have received glowing reports about the two new central defenders in Holland's national team.

Stefan de Vrij, 21, and 20 year-old Bruno Martins Indi both play for at Feyenoord.

They would cost £25million in a package deal this summer.

De Vrij knows about the huge Premier League interest and has told his club that he is not ready to sign a new deal.

He said: "I want to see what is happening now.

"I will focus on playing for the club and for Holland, but I won't sit down with the club now about a new contract."

The duo have been first choice in the Dutch national team under Louis van Gaal and have replaced Everton's Johnny Heitinga and Feyenoord's other central defender Joris Mathijsen. The older duo were in the last World Cup Finals and European Championship for Holland.

But Van Gaal believes that De Vrij and Martins Indi will be the new stars of next year's World Cup bid in Brazil.

The Premier League trio will all be present at today's game between Feyennord and PSV Eindhoven.

And De Vrij has been captain of Feyennord since he was 19.

Mail: 'Keeper makes LFC claim
Feb 23rd 2013, 15:58

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa claims Liverpool are on of a number of clubs looking to sign the Ajaccio shot stopper.

Ochoa has said that Liverpool made enquiries about his availability during the January transfer window, but no agreement was reached.

Although negotiations broke down before the end of the window, Ochoa hoped to be on the move in summer.

He believes a 'dream' move to Anfield is an option, but the 27-year-old stopper claims he has attracted interest from Italy, Spain and Germany too.

He told Orange: 'There was some communication with Liverpool, but I let everything be handled by my agent and my club's president. My job is to remain focused and think about my team, Ajaccio.

"There is no doubt, though, that this is a dream I have had since I came to Europe, since I started playing football.'

He added in football.fr: 'My agent had contact with Liverpool but there is nothing concrete. I hope this summer there will be some offers and I will analyse if it is the right time for me to leave Ajaccio.

'It will be difficult to choose between Liverpool, Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter, Bayern, Dortmund. It depends on how everything happens, I'll then choose the best one regarding all aspects.

'The idea is to play for one of the best teams. But it is hard to decide as there are five very good leagues: Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.'
