Sporting Life: Liverpool interested in Eriksen

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Ajax technical director Marc Overmars has confirmed Liverpool are keeping a close watch on midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The 21-year-old Denmark international is one of Europe's hottest prospects but he is out of contract in just over a year and it is expected numerous clubs will make a move this summer.

Liverpool have closely monitored the youngster's progress over the last couple of years and Overmars is well aware of their interest.

"We have the list of the scouts of foreign clubs who have been here recently and Liverpool has been a regular visitor," he told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to add three or four players in the summer transfer window as he tries to improve the depth of his squad.

His priority is a centre-back to replace the retiring Jamie Carragher with speculation linking Rodgers with a return to his former club Swansea for Wales captain Ashley Williams.

Rodgers is also expected to make a renewed attempt to bring Blackpool winger Tom Ince back to the club after negotiations hit an impasse in early January.

The People: Reds plan to bring Alonso back
Mar 31st 2013, 09:47

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wants to hand Steven Gerrard a new two-year deal.

The England captain, who has one more season remaining on his £130,000-a-week contract, will be 33 in May but Rodgers believes he can play at the top for several more years.

And he would love to reunite him in midfield with old pal Xabi Alonso by sealing an £8.5million deal for the Real Madrid star.

And Reds legend Gerrard is the man Rodgers may rely on to lure former team-mate Alonso back to the club and thrill the fans. The Reds have been looking into the transfer since learning that talks between the 31-year-old midfielder and Real Madrid over a new deal had stalled.

Liverpool are believed to have made contact with Alonso's agent, with talk of an £80,000-a-week deal on the table.

But Gerrard is the priority for Rodgers. As he prepared for today's trip to Premier League strugglers Aston Villa, the Anfield chief said: "Steven has a year left and it's something he and I are about to discuss."

Ryan Giggs will be playing past 40 and Rodgers believes Gerrard won't be far off that milestone. "I've never thought about replacing him because he's got many years left," he added.

"You look back at Gordon Strachan and Gary McAllister and guys like that. These players slept and rested in the afternoons, they ate the right things and kept their body weight the same.

"Steven is one of them. He's a remarkable professional."

News Media Watch from Liverpool FC: Telegraph: Downing - Threat of axe saved my career

Telegraph: Downing - Threat of axe saved my career
Mar 31st 2013, 09:35

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

There are two moments that stick out in Stewart Downing's sporting life. The first came as a child, growing up on Middlesbrough's deprived Pallister Park estate, when he made the "conscious decision" not to pursue the same lifestyle that led to some of his friends ending up in prison.

The second came far more recently, when Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers bluntly told the England international earlier this season that he had no future at the club and was free to leave - and then publicly accused him of not working hard enough.

At the time Downing's mind flitted back to the infamous 'envelopes' incident just before the start of the season, when Rodgers used the old mind trick of claiming in a squad meeting to have written the names of three players who would let down the club and placed them in envelopes, a moment caught on camera for the Being: Liverpool documentary.

"I just thought: 'I don't want to let him down.' But after he said what he said to me, I did think that maybe mine is one of the names in the envelopes," Downing says. "I think he was testing people, testing their characters, asking: 'Can they respond to criticism? Can they deal with a setback?'

"You can have great ability but if you can't deal with that, especially at a big club, then it won't work. You have to be mentally strong at the top because you get that criticism all the time."

Six months later it has come full circle. Downing is a regular in the Liverpool side, Rodgers was surprised he did not recently earn an England recall and the manager has told the 28-year-old that there is "no way" he will be sold this summer.

"He wants me to stay, he's told me that," Downing says, ahead of today's meeting with his former club, Aston Villa, who he left in the summer of 2011. "He said I have been brilliant and that's why he wants me to play every week. So, for me, that's all put to bed now."

At the time it felt very different. Rodgers had questioned whether Downing had the "fight" to be at Liverpool and whether he was willing to "work hard". That accusation, in particular, hurt.

"I was left thinking: 'Where's he got that from? What's he seeing?' One thing I have always tried to do is work hard. But, yes, I did use it as motivation. He said I could go but I didn't want to go - and maybe that's why he did it. We spoke and I told him I was frustrated at being in and out, in and out. And 'frustration' is the one word that summed it up.

"It was like a kick in the teeth; a shock. It hurt, it really did. I cannot afford not to be playing. Not at my age. He said: 'If things don't change you are free to leave.' He was quite open about it and credit to him for that.

"Everyone thought when he said it that that was it for me but I have actually always got on well with the manager and I have always worked hard. At Middlesbrough with Steve McClaren, I worked hard in a defensive, counter-attacking team and at Aston Villa it was the same.

"But the biggest criticism you can have is the manager saying you can go and I had that. I just felt I needed a chance, that I needed a run of games."

Injuries hit and Downing got that chance, unexpectedly, at left-back. "From then my aim was to play well and make him not leave me out. That was my aim but I also had to think that if I was leaving I had better play well for a move. Now I'm playing regularly and it means you can play with that bit more freedom.

"Players will be signed in the summer but that's not a problem for me. They've come to get my place in the past and there are plenty of wingers here at the moment who are not playing. One bad game and I might be out of the team so every week I have to be 'bang-on' and make sure the manager keeps thinking: 'I have to play him.' I'm in possession of that shirt."

Being "in possession of the shirt" is a phrase Downing often uses. It is an almost symbolic recognition of how far he has come, and how long he wants to stay there.

At Villa Park today, it will be an afternoon imbued with meaning. Not just because he played for Villa but because his father, also named Stewart, almost made it as a professional player there - only to have to "sacrifice" his career for his family. Indeed Downing Snr still has the letter inviting him for a trial.

"Now and again he shows me that letter," Downing says. "But my mum was pregnant [Downing has three sisters plus a fourth who died from leukaemia] so he had to pass it up. He's 52 now and still quick. He had to stop playing - he sacrificed himself, in a way, working on the North Sea oil rigs, working as a painter and decorator. He did what it took just to buy me boots."

The girls were into dance - Downing's older sister Natalie is planning to open a dance school - and Stewart was "pushed all the way" to become a footballer even if life growing up on Pallister Park was not easy.

"Some of my friends did OK and got jobs and so on but others, well, they got into trouble. Some went to jail," Downing says. "But it was never like that for me. I was always playing football. My dad was very strict, very firm, and he made sure I turned up, that I stayed away from trouble, and some kids don't get that in their lives and that's maybe why they fall by the wayside. But it was the making of me - where I came from, the way I was brought up, the mates I still have from then.

"It was a conscious decision [to steer clear of trouble]. It was drummed into me and I was also lucky that I started to play for Middlesbrough quite early. So there was always something for me whereas for some of the others - they didn't have that to look forward to. I was training three, four nights a week and playing at the weekends so I didn't have time to think about other stuff. Stability helps."

As Downing talks it is easy to see why he reacted so strongly to Rodgers' criticism and how that reaction has had a positive effect on the winger and on the team. He has fought back at Liverpool, although he is less optimistic about adding to his 34 England caps having been an unused substitute at Euro 2012. Since then he has had no contact with manager Roy Hodgson.

"I don't think he will call me up, to be honest," Downing says. "He took me to the Euros on the back of not having a great season and then didn't play me at all. And I honestly thought: 'Why am I here?' The team wasn't doing great in the games and I thought I could make a difference but it was the same subs every game and I just thought, 'He's not going to play me'. Since the Euros he's not picked me once."

Downing is far more optimistic about Liverpool who, he feels, are making significant progress under Rodgers. "We haven't played badly many times this season but we have to be more ruthless," he says. "We have to be able to win games even if we don't play well and as the manager says, sometimes you have to win ugly. We know we are a good team, we just have to cut the mistakes out.

"This is a special club, I think, and if we keep the squad as we are and the manager is able to build on that in the summer then I think next season we can be judged because by then the manager has put his foundations in place. Everyone knows how he wants to play and how we will be set up and we will have a right good go."

And this season? "It has probably been the worst 'best season' that I have had," Downing admits. "I've been playing, then not playing and sat in the stands every week - I'm not used to that - and then playing every week. Now the manager says I could play for England again. It's been a strange season."

CaughtOffside: PSG want £8.5m for Gameiro
Mar 31st 2013, 10:33

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

French source Le Parisien state that PSG are ready to listen to offers for bench bound striker Kevin Gameiro as long as those offers meet their €10m (£8.5m) valuation of the French international.

The former Lorient man has barely had a look-in since Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived at the Parc des Princes but has on occasion proved decisive, with some crucial goals for Carlo Ancelotti's side, with the 25 year old most recently hitting a late winner against Montpellier on Friday night.

Liverpool have been linked with interest in the pint sized striker with Brendan Rodgers keen to strengthen his Anfield attack.

Gameiro has been handed just four Ligue 1 starts thus far this term but has still managed to net six times and scored 11 in 27 starts in his first season at PSG after three solid seasons at Lorient.

Mail: Reds leading Eriksen race

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are favourites to sign Christian Eriksen after Ajax technical director Marc Overmars confirmed they have persistently scouted the midfielder this season.

Eriksen will be one of the hottest transfer targets in Europe this summer when he leaves Ajax - he has 12 months remaining on his contract but he will not sign another deal - yet the groundwork Liverpool have put means they are heading the chase.

The Denmark international is aware of Liverpool's interest and has been impressed with the way Luis Suarez has thrived after making a similar move to Anfield from Amsterdam in January 2011.

Tottenham are also interested in Eriksen, who turned down an approach from Manchester City two summers ago, but Overmars said Liverpool's continued presence has been noted.

'We have the list of scouts of foreign clubs who have been here recently and Liverpool have been a regular visitor,' Overmars said.

'We want him to stay here for at least two more years, but the day he leaves, he will be ready to play for the very best. He is a player that even the biggest clubs in the world could do with having in their squad.'

Telegraph: Mkhitaryan on Rodgers' radar
Mar 29th 2013, 10:28

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has started planning for more attacking reinforcements at Anfield by adding Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan to his summer wishlist.

Mkhitaryan is one of several advanced midfield players on Rodgers' radar, with Ajax's Christian Eriksen and Newcastle's Hatem Ben Arfa also under serious consideration.

Rodgers is keen to recruit another 'number ten' to play behind his strikers, although he is also prioritising a central defender to replace Jamie Carragher when the transfer window reopens.

The 24-year-old Mkhitaryan has caught the attention by impressing Shakhtar Dontesk, but he would cost around £12 million.

A more high profile target is Danish international Eriksen, the 21-year-old from Ajax who has just 18 months left on his current deal, alerting most of Europe's top clubs to his availability.

Sky Sports: Reds in Eriksen swoop
Mar 29th 2013, 10:17

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Marc Overmars has confirmed Liverpool have been 'frequent visitors' to Ajax this season amid reports Christian Eriksen is Brendan Rodgers' top summer transfer target.

Eriksen has long been regarded as one of the brightest talents in European football and the Denmark international only has one more season to run on his Ajax contract.

The 21-year-old confirmed last week that he was uncertain about his long-term future at the Amsterdam ArenA as he had not received a 'detailed' offer of a contract extension.

Reports in the Dutch and English media have subsequently claimed that Liverpool are favourites to snap up Eriksen in a transfer worth around €20million (£16.9m).

Ajax technical director Overmars would not comment on the transfer rumours, but acknowledged that Liverpool have regularly had scouts watching their games.

"We have a list of scouts from foreign clubs who have visited us and Liverpool have been a frequent visitor," Overmars told De Telegraaf.

Eriksen has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur among the other clubs to have a reported interest.

Meanwhile, speculation has also suggested that Shakhtar Donetsk's Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Newcastle United winger Hatem Ben Arfa are alternatives for Rodgers if the Liverpool manager fails to land Eriksen.

Echo: Jan - Williams should be a target
Mar 29th 2013, 10:24

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

I saw my old mate Ian Rush was on these pages this week talking about Ashley Williams, and how he would make a solid summer signing for Liverpool.

I agree, though I would always add the caveat that any deal would have to be done at the right price, considering the player's pedigree and age.

To me, Williams looks like one of those players who just improves year upon year. I saw a lot of him last year and thought he was good, but he had a mistake in him.

This year, he's ironed that out. Whether it is because of the presence of Chico Flores - a very good defender - alongside him, or what, I'm not at all sure, but he looks better this season than he did last.

He's assured, even when he's being put under pressure. He can play and he can graft. You don't get many centre backs like that at the moment.

The other one we have been linked with, although I'm told the interest in him has cooled somewhat, is Stefan De Vrij at Feyenoord.

I've seen him play. He's a young lad, but he is going to have a big future. He's typical of the Dutch game, if you like.

Comfortable on the ball, good passer. Maybe the only doubt you'd have over him is his pace.

Mirror: LFC eye Eriksen (video)
Mar 29th 2013, 10:39

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have stepped up their interest in young Danish star Christian Eriksen, following final checks during the international break.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has been impressed with scouting reports about the Ajax playmaker and, after watching him play for his country against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria over the past week, the Anfield club are ready to take the plunge with a firm offer.

After refusing the Dutch giants' offer of a new contract, 21-year-old Eriksen will be made available for transfer in the summer as he will be entering the final year of his current deal.

The midfielder's profile suits Liverpool's blueprint for new players so perfectly, they are ready to go head to head with the likes of Inter Milan, Tottenham and perhaps Chelsea - who have been linked with Eriksen recently - for his services.

Rodgers knows there will be competition for a player who already has 34 Denmark caps, but he believes he has two trump-cards he can play.

Not only is Liverpool centre-half Daniel Agger the midfielder's captain at international level, but Eriksen also played alongside Luis Suarez when he first broke into the Ajax first-team in 2010.

The player is also known to have an affinity for the Reds and has hinted strongly in recent weeks that he will leave Holland at the end of the season, with a switch to the Premier League his most likely option.

"I don't know if I will be an Ajax player after the summer - we will see what happens. I don't exclude anything," he said.

"I haven't received a detailed offer of a contract extension yet, but my agent has had talks with the club regarding that matter."

Liverpool were busy during the international break, with Eriksen one of several summer targets to be scouted while playing for their country.

Rodgers is determined to add a creative midfielder in the close-season, and he has identified several targets, to try to ensure he doesn't miss out if his first choice is tempted away elsewhere.

The Anfield boss is also highly impressed by Armenia attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and sent Anfield's head of analytics Michael Edwards - one of the key men in Liverpool's recruitment team - to Yereven to watch the 24-year-old play for his country against Czech Republic.

Edwards was joined by Barry Hunter, Liverpool's overseas scout.

Even though Armenia were beaten 3-0, the pair were impressed by Mkhitaryan, who took man of the match honours in a losing cause.

The sticking point with the 24-year-old has always been the fee - Shaktar Donetsk want £23million for a player they are convinced will become one of the top stars in Europe.

Again, Mkhitaryan has aroused interest from other Premier League clubs as well as Italy, but Rodgers will continue to monitor the situation to see if he can negotiate a price that fits into his budget.

Newcastle midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa and Brazilian defender Dede are also on Liverpool's radar.

Metro: Liverpool eye £12m striker
Mar 28th 2013, 14:58

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are set to pursue Shakhtar Donetsk striker Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer, as boss Brendan Rodgers looks to improve his attacking options.

Mkhitaryan recently indicated he was keen to move on from his current club, citing a move to one of Europe's top leagues as a priority.

It is believed Shakhtar would not be adverse to selling the striker, but any club is likely to have to stump up around £12m for his signature.

With Liverpool having brought Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho to Anfield in January, it looks as though Rodgers is keen to continue the squad's development ahead of next season.

The Reds have been without Champions League football since the 2009-10 season and look likely to miss out again this time around, but have improved immeasurably over the course of the campaign.

But the acquisition of Armenia international Mkhitaryan will ease the pressure on top scorer Luis Suarez, as well as Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini, who has been on the sidelines for best part of the season.

The 24-year-old would also arrive at Anfield with Champions League experience.

Fenerbahce striker Moussa Sow says he would welcome a move to Liverpool in the summer.

Sow was on Brendan Rodgers' radar back in January and he tried to sign him but the Turkish club rejected his overtures.

But the 27-year-old remains a wanted man - and he's up for a move to Anfield.

"There is a lot of talk. Everyone knows I want to play in the Premier League one day," he told French newspaper Liberation.

"If Liverpool made a formal offer and if my club accepted I would be happy to play in England."

Sow joined Fenerbahce from Lille for £8.5m in January 2012 and the Senegal international has scored scored 17 goals in all competitions this season.

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have made Shakhtar Donetsk midfield Henrik Mkhitaryan their "top target" according to Russian website Sportbox.

The Armenian's all-action displays have drawn many scouts to keep an eye on 24 year-old, and he boasts an astonishing 19-goal haul from central midfield this season, mainly thanks to a run of 10 goals in six games during the early part of the campaign.

With Shakhtar now out of the Champions League, Mkhitaryan has admitted that he is looking to leave Ukraine this summer and the Premier League could well be a target:

"For every player, to play for the strongest clubs in the world is a dream, and the main goal," said Mkhitaryan.

"I will do everything possible to move this summer to a different team."

Any deal would require a fee of around £25million according to Russian reports.

Liverpool will try to land Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer for around £12m.

Brendan Rodgers enjoyed a decent winter window with the acquisitions of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge and he is eager to build on that this time around.

He has earmarked Mkhitaryan and the indication is that Shakhtar are willing to sell.

The Armenia international has played for his current club since 2010 but is keen on a new challenge. Indeed, only recently did the 24-year-old go public on his future.

Mkhitaryan says he is ready for a switch to a major European league and Liverpool are plotting their move.

Arsenal are pressing ahead with their interest in Swansea defender Ashley Williams.

The centre back has had an impressive season for Michael Laudrup's side, and his performances have alerted Wenger and his influential chief scout Steve Rowley.

They will follow up their interest with a bid this summer, but will face stiff competition from Liverpool, where former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to be reunited with Williams.

Sources close to Swansea's skipper claim the Wales international will find it difficult to turn down the chance of a move to a more high-profile club this summer.
