ClubCall: LFC close to defender
Apr 30th 2013, 13:13

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Reading defender Alex Pearce is understood to be set to join Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer after turning down a new deal.

The Royals have been trying to tie the 24-year-old down to a new deal all season, but he has refused to sign and is reported to have told Nigel Adkins over the weekend he wants to leave.

Liverpool have long been linked with a move for the central defender, who has not been a regular in the Royals side this season, and a move looks to be on the verge of going through.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is on the look for Jamie Carragher's replacement as the veteran stopper is set to retire at the end of the season and Pearce could be the man.

Rodgers is also being linked with a move for Royals goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and a double swoop could be on the cards following Reading's relegation to the Championship.

talkSPORT: Battle for Montoya
Apr 30th 2013, 15:43

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool face a battle with Inter Milan to clinch the signing of Barcelona defender Martin Montoya.

The Merseyside club are looking to strengthen their squad during the summer and manager Brendan Rodgers is reported to be a big admirer of the 22-year-old.

With Jamie Carragher announcing his retirement from the game, Rodgers is keen to bolster his defence and add some quality players to the squad as they look to close the gap on the top four.

But he will have to move quickly if he wants to sign the Spanish defender as Inter are making advanced moves to sign Montoya.

The Italian giants are looking for another right sided player after Javier Zanetti was ruled out for a lengthy period after rupturing his Achilles' tendon.

Barcelona will be looking for a sizeable fee for the talented full-back and both clubs look set for a bidding war during the summer.

Express: Trio considering Cesar
Apr 30th 2013, 13:08

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

PREMIER LEAGUE sides Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are following QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who has allegedly ruled out a return to Brazil.

Cesar has had an impressive season for the Hoops, after displacing Rob Green as QPR's number one.

But the 33-year-old Brazil international could be set to leave the club at the end of the season following relegation, although his agent has denied he could head to his home nation.

Cesar is being tracked by Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, while Manchester United were thought to be watching the shot-stopper in January.

"Everything said on the player's future is absolutely premature, there is still nothing concrete," Josias Cardoso told Calciomercato.

"Julio wants a team that proves it has a focus on him, but anyone interested in him will have to talk first with QPR, because the contract with the London club expires in 2016.

"In two weeks I should come to Europe to talk with Julio - but back to Brazil? I don't think so. If QPR were to decide to sell Julio Cesar, I still see a European future for him."

Metro: Reds to sign Pearce
Apr 30th 2013, 12:12

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are poised to snap up Reading defender Alex Pearce when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has been monitoring the young centre back throughout the Royals campaign and has seen enough to convince him to bring him to Anfield.

Pearce, 24, has only made 21 appearances this term but the Liverpool boss is convinced he has all the raw attributes to be a big hit on Merseyside and sees him as a perfect replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher.

Reading's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed after a drab 0-0 draw with fellow strugglers QPR on Sunday.

It is understood that Republic of Ireland international Pearce confirmed to Royals manager Nigel Adkins after the game that he would not be signing a new deal at the club, with a move to Liverpool already agreed in principle.

Liverpool look set to sign Reading defender Alex Pearce.

The 24-year-old centre back is out of contract at the Madejski Stadium in the summer and has rejected eight offers from the club, with wages understood to be the sticking point.

And now Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is poised to make his move, having been on the search for a new central defender since Jamie Carragher announced his retirement.

Pearce, Reading's Player of the Season last year, has not played since a 4-1 defeat away to Arsenal last month due to his reluctance to sign a new contract.

Rodgers is an admirer of Pearce's professionalism and promoted him to the role of Reading captain when he was in charge of the club in 2009.

Reading's relegation to the Championship was confirmed after the goalless draw with Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.

Freiburg have insisted that starlet Matthias Ginter will not be leaving the club this summer.

The German Under-19 captain is rated as one of the best young players in the Bundesliga, and the midfielder has already been linked with a host of clubs.

Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are all reported to be on his trail.

But Freiburg manager Christian Streich has ruled out his club allowing Ginter to depart.

Streich told Sport1 media: "There is no doubt he will be staying on.

"Matthias (Ginter) has a contract with our club. A long-term one. In addition, he is also of the same opinion.

"He is having the good sense to agree to this. We are definitely not letting anyone else make our very own decisions."

Mirror: Tom Ince latest
Apr 30th 2013, 08:54

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Tottenham are ready to splash out £6.5 million for Blackpool's young attacker Thomas Ince - as they start planning for next season.

Spurs supremo Daniel Levy wants to agree a fee with the Seasiders as soon as possible and tie up a move for the England under-21 wide man who can play down either wing.

Ince junior - picked in the Championship team of the year - has been a revelation this season and would fit snugly into Andre Villas-Boas's squad because of his versatility.

Liverpool tried to take Ince back to Anfield in the last window but could not agree a price, but Spurs hope they can come up with an offer that hard-bargaining Blackpool chief Karl Oyston cannot refuse.

Ince - whose dad is boss Paul Ince - is also due a slice of the profit after joining Blackpool rather than sit it out as a Liverpool reserve when he was a kid.

Spurs have relied heavily on Aaron Lennon to provide their wing skills this season and have been lacking in that department when he missed out with injury.

Ince is at an age and stage where he will not demand to be a starter but could expect to play enough games at top-flight level to keep his career going on the upward path.

Levy has always found cash for rising stars and Ince fits that bill, with Tottenham backing out of the chase for Wilfried Zaha in January when Manchester United raised the stakes.

Echo: City pays Anne respects
Apr 30th 2013, 08:24

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

MERSEYSIDE paid its respects at the funeral of Hillsborough campaign mum Anne Williams.

Crowds lined the streets outside Our Lady's church in Formby for the service.

It was a fitting tribute to Anne, whose 15-year-old son, Kevin, died in the disaster.

After two decades of trying, she finally got the news she deserved last year when the Hillsborough Independent Panel report detailed the extent of the cover-up.

She had always known the truth, and after so long campaigning, she made sure that the world did too.

This month she attended the Hillsborough annual memorial service at Anfield - the first to be held since the panel's report.

Just days later, she died. It was wonderful that this most courageous of campaigners was able to attend that service - and hear Everton chairman Bill Kenwright tell the world: "They picked on the wrong mums."

But it is so sad that she died before that truth was followed by justice and accountability. And yet, thanks to the efforts of herself and fellow campaigners, Anne knew it was coming.

At her funeral, family and friends were joined by MPs Andy Burnham, Steve Rotheram and Bill Esterton, Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson, Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Sharon Sullivan, Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers, investigative journalist Roger Cook and former Everton player Michael Ball.

Anne's brother, Danny Gordon, summed it up with a poem she had written, which ended with the lines: "We hoped that justice would come one day, and those who caused us pain would pay."

May you rest in peace Anne. Justice will come.

Mirror: Reade on Anne Williams
Apr 30th 2013, 08:28

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

They lined the streets of Formby to salute a woman of unique courage.

In nearby Liverpool they lowered the flags to half-mast and beamed a moving tribute on to huge city centre screens.

Inside the packed church, where MPs and local dignitaries swelled the pews, the mourners stood four deep in the side aisles and many dozens more looked on from the back.

It was as though a war hero was being laid to rest on Merseyside yesterday.

And in a way it was.

A hero of a 24-year battle against lies and subterfuge.

A hero who never flinched in her fight against injustice right to the very end.

That's why they called the service a "Celebration for the life of Anne Williams".

The mum-of-three would have been so proud of this heart-felt, emotional tribute.

Not out of vanity, but in recognition of the rightfulness of the cause she devoted her life to... overturning the Hillsborough inquests which falsified the reasons she lost her beloved 15-year-old son Kevin in 1989.

How apt it was that she was taken into church on a beautiful spring day, the same as it was when she last saw Kevin as he raced off to see his beloved Liverpool play an FA Cup semi-final, never to return.

As the hearse pulled up outside Our Lady Of Compassion Church, and white flowers spelling out the word "Mum" came into view, a hush fell over the street.

Hundreds of people, many wearing Liverpool and Everton colours, bowed their heads as her coffin was carried out with a bouquet of red and white roses on top.

A floral tribute on the coffin from her husband read: "Night night Annie. Love you Steve. xxx"

She was led into church to the sound of the football hymn Abide With Me, past weeping friends, supporters and family members, including Steve, her two remaining children, Sara, 33, and Michael, 41, and her grandchildren, Nina, 12, Grace, five and Finley, four.

To the side of the altar, Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre, Labour MPs Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram and Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson looked on sombrely.

Other families who lost loved ones on the Leppings Lane terraces that day came to pay their respects, including Barry Devonside, whose son Christopher, 18, died and Steve Kelly, whose brother Michael was crushed in the tragedy.

Stevie Hart, who carried Kevin from the pitch on an ad hoarding, recited The Farewell by Armagh writer Peter Makem, penned in memory of "a heroic life, a great citizen of the city and the world".

It read: "Farewell good friend, farewell. Your deeds have changed us. Your days have lived in us, that we must speak the flame they lit."

Rarely will you hear a line more poignant, powerful and true read at a funeral than: "Your deeds have changed us."

Because Anne's deeds helped bring about a change of historic proportions.

The refusal of this woman, who died of bowel cancer 11 days ago aged 62, to be beaten down by the Establishment in finding the truth about her son's death did so much to transform the national perception of Britain's greatest sporting disaster.

Parish priest Father Bernard Higham spoke of a woman who was "determined, faithful and gracious".

He pointed at a small, flickering candle in a brass stand that Anne had given him after Kevin's death, which had been placed on her coffin.

In 1989 it was put next to a statue of Our Lady and it had been lit by parishioners in Kevin's memory ever since.

Now, said the priest, they will light it for both mother and son.

As Anne's brother Danny Gordon read out a poem Anne had written, which he had found sorting through her belongings, he wasn't alone in feeling choked...

"I look up to the sky, ninety-six stars shining bright, The ninety-six helped me in my fight, Kevin was top of the list because he was mine, His case was so corrupt and riddled with crime, The other ninety-five must be the same, If they did it to one they would do it again, I got to know a lot of families and heard the tales they had to tell, All about their loved ones going through hell, We suffered setbacks and lots of worries, We laughed, we cried and swapped our stories, We hoped that justice would come one day, When those who caused so much pain would pay."

Danny said: "Anne has taken many knocks and setbacks throughout her life and always found the strength to get through them without becoming bitter.

She touched many hearts throughout the world and has been an inspiration to many.

"She'll be deeply missed by us all. We'll never walk alone. She'll always be with us."

When he finished, the 800-strong congregation gave a loud round of applause.

As the coffin was led back out into the spring sunshine to the sound of Time To Say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli, the swelling crowds fell silent again.

Standing outside, Shadow Health Minister Andy Burnham, who has done much behind the scenes in Westminster to expose the Hillsborough cover-up, said it had been a privilege to have known her.

"Anne reminded me of my mum," he said. "I'll never forget her talking to me after the 20th anniversary service when she said she had evidence Kevin was still alive at 4pm on that day. I knew then the whole thing had to be brought down.

"After all those years the Establishment was wrong and Anne was right.

"That's an incredible epitaph for a mum from Formby. She went to the ends of the earth for her son and for everybody else."

Liverpool MP Steve Rotheram added: "Anne was a woman of great courage and fortitude. She never gave up."

And Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said of the council's decision to lower its flags: "We wanted to show our respect to a woman who has been an integral part of the Hillsborough campaign for 24 years. Anne will never be forgotten."

As her cortege slowly headed off for Southport crematorium, the crowd on the pavements burst into spontaneous applause for the tiny local woman who never tired of kicking down the seemingly overwhelming obstacles.

One woman threw a rose at the hearse. And, as her coffin moved slowly past his eye-line, a middle-aged man next to her simply mouthed: "What a bloody inspiration."

Nothing else needed saying.

Sunderland star Stephane Sessegnon has quelled talk that he will leave the Stadium of Light this summer, amid reported interest emanating from Liverpool.

Liverpool were linked a move for the 28-year-old during the January transfer window, speculation fuelled by reports suggesting the attacking midfielder was still struggling to adjust to life in the north east.

But the Benin international has reassured Sunderland fans that his future lies with the club, confident that his former personal issues are now a thing of the past.

"The issue with my family is settled now," Sessegnon told the Northern Echo. "Two years ago when I arrived, sometimes my family wasn't here, but now it's fine.

"They live here now and the problem is completely finished. Even then (last summer) through, I never gave it (leaving the club) a thought. I didn't think about it and I didn't think about was being said about me."

Sunderland star Stephane Sessegnon has refuted suggestions that he could leave the Stadium of Light in the summer.

The 28-year-old was the subject of transfer talk during the January transfer window, but interest in him subsided.

The Black Cats' Premier League status is far from guaranteed, with tonight's fixture against Aston Villa being billed by Paolo Di Canio as a 'Champions League Final'.

Despite past reports suggesting he is unsettled on Wearside, Sessegnon insists he has put his personal issues to bed.

In an interview with the Northern Echo, Sessegnon said: "The issue with my family is settled now.

"Two years ago when I arrived, sometimes my family wasn't here, but now it's fine.

"They live here now and the problem is completely finished.

"Even then (last summer) through, I never gave it (leaving the club) a thought. I didn't think about it and I didn't think about was being said about me."

Sessegnon has seven Premier League goals to his name this season.

GiveMeFootball: Liverpool and Spurs eye striker
Apr 29th 2013, 14:15

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool and Tottenham could turn to Swansea star Michu this summer as they search to bolster their attacking options, according to the Daily Express.

The Spanish striker has enjoyed a superb debut Premier League campaign, hitting 19 league goals for the Swans, and Liverpool and Spurs are thought to be among several clubs keeping tabs on the attacker.

But Michael Laudrup's side are under no pressure to sell, and the report claims they're set to slap a £35m valuation on the forward.

Laudrup signed Michu for just £2m from Rayo Vallecano last summer, and he's won praise from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Rickie Lambert this season.

The Swansea boss has moved to quash rumours linking the Spaniard with a move away from the Liberty Stadium, but fresh reports in Spain suggest a mega-money offer could lead to a sale.

The 27-year-old forward was reportedly the subject of two £20m bids from Russia in the January transfer window - thought to be Anzhi Makhachkala and Zenit St Petersburg - while Everton, Spurs and Liverpool would be willing to keep him in the Premier League.

With Luis Suarez banned for 10 matches after biting Branislav Ivanovic, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is thought to have identified Michu as a potential strike partner.

He's under contract until 2016, but the report claims if he's sold Swansea will turn to £14m-rated Spain striker Alvaro Negredo to replace him.

Echo: Hundreds attend funeral
Apr 29th 2013, 16:24

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Hillsborough campaign mum Anne Williams was laid to rest in a funeral service attended by hundreds of people today.

Crowds lined the streets outside Our Lady's church in Formby for the service this afternoon.

Along with family and close friends, Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers, LFC managing director Ian Ayre and MPs including Andy Burnham attended for what was described as a "celebration" of her life.

Tributes to Anne, who died aged 62 on April 18, were paid at the service by her brother Danny Gordon and by Stevie Hart, a Liverpool fan who tried to save her son Kevin on the Sheffield pitch.

Well-wishers, many sporting Liverpool and Everton scarves and shirts, gathered outside the church and waited to hear the service, which was relayed to them via speakers.

During the funeral Danny recalled his childhood in Formby with Anne and the innocence of their youth.

He added: "We were always taught that anyone in authority should be trusted.

"What happened to our society when a mum can't send her son to a football match and rely on his safe return?"

Mr Gordon read a poem written by Anne, which ended with the lines: "We hoped that justice would come one day, and those who caused us pain would pay."

A candle donated to the church by Anne in 15-year-old Kevin's memory in 1989 was lit and placed on her coffin throughout the service.

The congregation left the church to the sound of Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli's recording of Time to Say Goodbye, before family and close friends went on to Southport crematorium and later Formby Guild Hall.

As the funeral car bearing Anne's coffin, decorated simply with the word 'Mum' drove away, onlookers burst in to spontaneous applause.

Speaking after the service, Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said Anne must never be forgotten.

He added: "We showed our appreciation to a woman who has been an integral part of the campaign for justice for 24 years.

"When the story is completed on Hillsborough, she won't see the final chapter written, but she is an integral part of that story."

Mirror: Reds look a bit of alright without Suarez
Apr 29th 2013, 08:34

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

The shadow of the Luis Suarez scandal that has hung over Liverpool was swept away by a magnificent on-field display from the Merseysiders.

A stunning start from Brendan Rodgers' side produced goals from Daniel Agger and Jordan Henderson inside the first 18 minutes as woeful Newcastle were plunged deeper into relegation trouble.

Two more second-half strikes from Suarez stand-in Daniel Sturridge, a first Liverpool goal from substitute Fabio Borini and a second for Henderson completed the rout.

To add to the Geordie woes they had Mathieu Debuchy sent off late on for two yellow cards.

Under-fire Toon boss Alan Pardew said: "It was an awful performance. We are going to have to do something about that for next week. Today's performance was even worse than the Sunderland game."

Fabricio Coloccini was missing again and Pardew added: "Our skipper is going to have to come back and give us some experience and leadership."

The Reds may have lost South American talisman Suarez for 10 games but they have unearthed another gem from that continent in 20-year-old Brazilian Philippe Coutinho.

He, along with Sturridge and Steven Gerrard, was responsible for this victory.

The red shirts seemed to be first to every ball and it was no suprise when Agger headed them ahead on three minutes.

A simple cross from Stewart Downing caught out the lumbering home defence and the unmarked Agger floated his header over Rob Elliot for his third goal of the season.

Newcastle's world fell apart on 17 minutes when former Sunderland ace Henderson fired Liverpool into a 2-0 lead.

This time the 20-year-old Coutinho and Sturridge combined before the striker rolled the ball into the path of Henderson. He was left with the routine task of side-footing the ball into an empty net.

Liverpool may have endured a traumatic week in the spotlight over the Suarez biting scandal but there was no sign of any lack of belief.

Coutinho was a revelation in midfield with a touch and vision belying his tender years.

And Sturridge's intelligent, roving front play ensured that he may prove an adequate replacement while Suarez serves his suspension.

He was a constant threat to the ramshackle Newcastle defence that was offered too little protection by holding midfielders James Perch and Cheick Tiote.

Apart from Perch missing a sitter on 36 minutes, when he inexplicably headed wide from Massadio Haidara's clever left-wing cross, Newcastle produced little good football of note.

Pardew threw on French duo Ben Arfa and Yoan Gouffran for Jonas Guiterrez and Perch for the second period - and for the first nine minutes it re-ignited the sell-out crowd.

But when Coutinho robbed Ben Arfa on the halfway line on 54 minutes, it proved to be the key moment of the game.

The Brazilian raced 30 yards before slipping in a great pass for Sturridge to smash home.

St. James' was silent again.

That signalled the rush to the exits by home fans and one disillusioned supporter ran up to the home technical area and flung his black and white scarf towards Pardew.

Sturridge fired home No.4 after Henderson intelligently flicked on a wonderful diagonal pass from Gerrard.

Newcastle fell apart and Borini poked home a fifth on 74 minutes after great work by Downing set him up.

Debuchy then picked up a red card for a second yellow after a reckless foul and Henderson's free-kick sailed into the net without anyone getting a touch.

It could have been seven but for Elliot's fine save from Coutinho's rocket but it was still Newcastle's worst home defeat since 1925.

Kop chief Brendan Rodgers said: "We were brilliant. It was so clinical. We got off to a terrific start and we were aggressive."

Liverpool are ready to pounce for Loic Remy during the summer.

The France international only left Marseille for Queens Park Rangers in the January transfer window, when Harry Redknapp used £8million of his budget to lure him to the capital.

Remy was tasked with scoring the goals to keep the Hoops in the Premier League, but despite a return of five goals in 10 matches, they were relegated on Sunday.

Although he wants to keep the bulk of his squad together, Redknapp knows owner Tony Fernandes is likely to ask him to offload a number of his big-earners as the Loftus Road club prepare for life in the Championship. And Remy heads a list including the likes of Adel Taarabt, Julio Cesar and Christopher Samba as their most saleable assets.

Remy has a relegation release clause of £8million in his contract, a fee which will earn plenty of interest during the coming weeks.

Arsenal have been admirers of the striker in the past, whilst Tottenham Hotspur were linked earlier this month and Alan Pardew, who already has a number of French players, would love to add him to his Newcastle United squad.

And now the Express claim Brendan Rodgers has identified the 26-year-old for a move to Anfield.

Rodgers has been told he has cash to spend when the window reopens, and he is prepared to challenge his top-flight rivals to sign the QPR ace.

This would then give him some mouth-watering options in his attacking positions, with Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho already on board for the third highest scorers in the Premier League.

Sevilla's Argentinian defender Federico Fazio is a target of top clubs in England and Italy, according to his agent.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who is out of contract at Sevilla next summer, has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Liverpool.

But according to his agent, Ariel Kiperszmid, his Premier League suitors could face competition for the 6ft 5in defender's signature from four Serie A clubs.

Kiperszmind says Sevilla turned down offers from Germany and Russia for Fazio in January and are expecting more at the end of the season.

"In January the club rejected offers from Germany and Russia but in the summer they could be looking at making millions of Euros," Kiperszmid told tuttomercatoweb.

"There are four Italian teams interested in him and Serie A could be a good destination for him, but there are also admirers in England.

"Fede could play for one of Europe's top teams."

Kiperszmind says the defender, who joined the Spanish club's B side in 2007, is eyeing a fresh challenge.

"His contract runs out in 2014 and we have spoken about extending it with Sevilla," added his agent.

"However, his future is probably away from Sevilla because he wants to experience something different."
