Goal.com: Reds set for loan deal
Jul 31st 2013, 13:38

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Benfica to sign defender Lorenzo Melgarejo on a season-long loan.

Brendan Rodgers also has the option to make the move permanent for a fee of approximately £7 million at the end of the campaign.

The 22-year-old Paraguay international is being brought to Anfield to provide competition for Jose Enrique at left-back, with Rodgers keen to strengthen his defensive options before competing for a top-four place this term.

Melgarejo made 35 appearances in all competitions for Benfica last season, including the club's Europa League final defeat to Chelsea in May.

Liverpool's move for defender hinges on whether a work permit can be obtained as Melgarejo has secured just one senior international cap.

The Paraguayan has also been linked with a move to Arsenal and Turkish side Fenerbahce this summer.

Goal.com: No agreement for defender
Jul 31st 2013, 15:19

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt has moved to deny rumours suggesting centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos is close to joining Liverpool.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield for months now, with recent reports suggesting that a deal somewhere in the region of £13 million is close to being concluded.

However, Heldt has claimed the Bundesliga outfit are yet to receive any offers for the promising Greek international, insisting his side are currently planning for the youngster's return from a devastating knee injury suffered in November 2012.

"There's not a jot of truth in it," Heldt told German newspaper Reviersport. "We have no offer for Papadopoulos. Neither from Liverpool or some other club.

"On the contrary: we are very happy that 'Papa' is making progress and can be back soon, hopefully. We're planning with him."

Despite being adamant that no bid has arrived for Schalke's prized asset, Heldt did go on to reveal that the club will consider the sale of Papadopoulos should a sufficient offer be tabled.

He added: "If we receive an offer for him, we will come together and talk about that as we do with every player for us."

Metro: Caulker puts Liverpool on alert
Jul 31st 2013, 10:36

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have been put on alert after Tottenham defender Steven Caulker emerged as an £8million target for Cardiff City.

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of the 21-year-old centre-half after taking him on loan from Spurs when he was in charge at Swansea.

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay wants the England international to strengthen his defence as he seeks to make three more signings before the Bluebirds' Premier League campaign kicks off against West Ham on Saturday, August 17.

Tottenham value Caulker at £12m and may be reluctant to sell as they are short of cover at the centre of their defence.

Jan Vertonghen suffered ankle ligament damage in the Barclays Asia Trophy match with Sunderland in Hong Kong and may miss the start of the new season.

Younes Kaboul has yet to regain full fitness after missing nearly all last season with a knee injury and William Gallas is no longer at the club.

Spurs, though, have been linked with a move with a £6m move for 23-year-old Steaua Bucharest central defender Vlad Chiriches and Sporting Lisbon's Tiago Ilori, also a target for Liverpool. If one of them is captured Caulker may be allowed to go.

talkSPORT: Russian interest in Liverpool targets
Jul 31st 2013, 11:11

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

A trio of Russian clubs have failed in audacious double swoops for Liverpool targets Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld, according to sources in Russia.

The highly rated Ajax pair have been the subject of much interest this summer - the former has also been chased by AC Milan, while the latter has spurned an offer from Norwich City.

Zenit St Petersburg, CSKA Moscow and Dinamo Moscow all approached the Dutch champions to prise away the duo, but both players rejected a switch to Russia.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton is still keen on Alderweireld, despite the Belgium international rejecting the chance to move to Carrow Road.

And Denmark star Eriksen is still being considered by Brendan Rodgers after he failed to land Henrikh Mkhitaryan earlier this summer.

Mail: Liverpool strengthen defence
Jul 31st 2013, 09:57

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have agreed a loan deal for Benfica's Lorenzo Melgarejo as they look to strengthen their left-back options.

Brendan Rodgers said while Liverpool were in Australia that he wanted to bring in another left-back, as he only has Jose Enrique and England U21 international Jack Robinson for that position.

And the Liverpool manager has turned to Melgarejo, a Paraguay international who played for Benfica in their Europa League final defeat against Chelsea.

A season-long deal has been agreed, pending a work permit. However, that is by no means a formality as the 22-year-old only has one full international cap.

All being well, Liverpool have the option to make the deal permanent next summer for a fee of around £7million.

Express: Rodgers agrees deal
Jul 31st 2013, 10:05

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have agreed a loan deal for Benfica left-back Lorenzo Melgarejo with a view to a permanent £8.5million transfer.

Earlier this week Express Sport reported that Brendan Rodgers was looking to boost his defensive options with a move for Melgarejo.

And now Rodgers has secured competition for Jose Enrique at left-back this season after agreeing a deal with Benfica.

Melgarejo will switch to Anfield initially on a season-long loan deal that could be made permanent next summer for a fee of around £8.5m.

The move is subject to a work permit being granted for the 22-year-old, who has one cap for Paraguay.

The Reds were informed of Melgarejo's availability last month after Benfica signed two left-backs - Silvio and Bruno Cortez.

Formerly a left winger, Melgarejo has been transformed into a left-back in Portugal, a position he occupied during Benfica's Europa League final defeat against Chelsea in May.

Echo: Deal agreed for left-back
Jul 31st 2013, 07:09

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool FC have agreed a deal in principle to sign Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo on loan.

The Paraguayan left-back will move to Anfield on a season-long deal, subject to a work permit application being accepted.

The Reds will have the option to make the move permanent for a fee of around £7m next summer, should the move develop into a success.

Liverpool were informed of Melgarejo's availability after Benfica moved to sign two left-backs, Silvio and Bruno Cortez, on loan last month.

The 22-year-old featured as the Portuguese outfit made their way to the Europa League final last season, eventually losing out to Chelsea, and can play as a wide midfielder as well as a full back.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers remains keen to add a central defender to his squad.

He retains an interest in Schalke centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos, but the clubs remain some way apart in their respective valuations of the Greek international, despite reports to the contrary.

Express: Race begins for Rondon

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

LIVERPOOL face fierce competition from Borussia Dortmund for the signature of Rubin Kazan forward Salomon Rondon.

Brendan Rodgers has also been looking at Luis Muriel as he looks to make attacking reinforcements.

Though Robert Lewandowski is set to stay at Dortmund for another season, they appear to be making contingency plans should he leave.

According to Spanish publication Marca, Dortmund have already initiated early contact with Kazan to enquire about his price tag.

They also suggest that Kazan would want to recoup as much of the £8.7m they forked out for him to take him from Malaga.

Rondon scored 7 as a starter in 20 matches with Kazan.

He scored 25 goals in two seasons with Malaga.

News Media Watch from Liverpool FC: Express: Andre Ayew future latest

Express: Andre Ayew future latest
Jul 30th 2013, 22:04

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

MARSEILLE coach Elie Baup has said Andre Ayew will not be leaving the club this summer.

Ayew has clashed with Baup over his desire to play as a central striker rather that out on the wing, and had been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer.

But Baup, backed by Marseille president Vincent Labrune, has now emphatically stated that the player will not be allowed to leave.

Asked about Ayew's future, Baup said: "Let me be clear: I am counting on all the players who are here."

But Baup also confirmed that he would not be indulging the player's positional preference in the upcoming Ligue 1 campaign, after Ayew continued to feature as a winger during pre-season friendlies.

He added: "Who has promised to change our structure? Certainly not me."

Baup's comments suggests that Ayew's somewhat tumultuous relationship with Marseille may be set to continue and could encourage Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal to keep tabs on the Ghana international as the season unfolds.

Marseille reportedly turned down a £5m bid from Arsenal for Ayew back in 2010, while Manchester United may well have moved on following the arrival of David Moyes.

Last month Ayew expressed his hope that Liverpool would be the club to bring him to the Premier League.

He said: "The English league would be a dream.

"It is the most followed league in Ghana so, yes, I have a big preference for England.

"I've always supported Liverpool."

Ayew scored ten goals in 39 appearances for Marseille last season.

Mirror: Fresh approach for Greek
Jul 30th 2013, 21:58

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have made a fresh approach for powerful Greek international defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

Yet lingering concerns over the highly-rated Schalke centre-half's long term knee problem, have complicated negotiations, as the Reds try to thrash out fail-safe guarantees in any deal.

It is understood Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers - first linked with Papadopoulos in May - would ideally like to take the 21-year-old on loan initially, with a guaranteed fee of around £12million to be paid if he erases all injury doubts.

Germans Schalke would prefer the cash up front, but accept they may have to compromise over a defender who has been sidelined since November following surgery on a serious knee ligament problem.

Papadopoulos is finally back in training, with his club releasing a brief update on his condition on Tuesday, confirming his return to a full training programme and adding that he is ready to join his team-mates in contact work in the coming days.

The defender admitted his relief at clearing this latest hurdle in his comeback.

"It was a great feeling to be back... even though it was very tiring," he said. "I make progress every day and am happy that I will soon be able to train with the team again."

Reports in Greece have claimed a deal is close, with the defender ready to prove his fitness in a full medical within the next 10 days, but so far no agreement has been reached with Schalke.

LIVERPOOL appear on the verge of signing Greek defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

Reports in Greece suggest that the Anfield club have already agreed a fee with Schalke for the player and a move has only been delayed by the player's recovery from a serious knee injury.

Papadopoulos has been a long-term target for Liverpool, with the player present at the club's match against Fulham at the end of last season, and there are even rumours that a £13m fee may have been agreed for some time.

Greek newspaper Sport Day are reporting that Liverpool could be set to announce the move when they arrive back from their pre-season trip to Thailand.

Papadopoulos has reportedly advised Liverpool that he is now sufficiently fit to undergo a medical and hopes to travel to England for that purpose on August 10.

Liverpool have performed a U-turn and revived interest in a £13m move for Schalke defender Kryiakos Papadopoulos.

The 21-year-old Greece international has been out with a knee ligament injury and Liverpool feared he would not be fit for the start of the season. However, they are willing to conclude a deal if he passes a rigorous medical.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is also considering Rubin Kazan's Salomon Rondon as an alternative to Valencia striker Roberto Soldado.

Express: Striker in demand
Jul 30th 2013, 14:31

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Napoli could be set to continue their summer spending spree after agreeing terms with Porto star Jackson Martinez - although Liverpool and Tottenham are not yet out of the race to sign the £35million-rated striker.

Both Liverpool and Spurs have been linked with moves for the prolific Colombian international in recent months - after he scored 29 goals in 38 games for Porto last season.

And while Napoli could add Martinez to their ranks this summer - the player's agent has warned that they or any other suitors must pay the full £35m release clause in his contract.

"There is an agreement with the player," Manuel Manzo told Sky Sport Italia over Napoli's interest in Martinez.

"However, one with Porto is missing and they don't want to sell.

"The only chance of a move happening, in my opinion, is if the Azzurri pay the €40m (£35m) rescission fee clause which is in his contract. Otherwise he won't move."

ClubCall: Defender deal back on
Jul 30th 2013, 09:24

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are to resurrect their interest in Greek international defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos as they look to add to their defence.

Brendan Rodgers is keen to strengthen his squad and wants to add a quality centre-half to his ranks, with the 21-year-old fitting the bill. Rodgers tried to land the Schalke player earlier in the summer but was knocked back by the asking price of £19m, and the Reds are hoping an improved offer of £13m will be enough to persuade Schalke to sell.

Much could depend on Schalke's efforts to get into the Champions League group stages and they are closing in on that goal after making it through to the final round of the qualifying stages.

If they reach the next phase then the defender is unlikely to want to leave the Bundesliga side for a club who can not offer any European football at all.

ClubCall: Defender linked with loan switch
Jul 30th 2013, 08:00

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to make an offer to Benfica for the services of Paraguayan defender Lorenzo Melgarejo.

The left-back is seen as one of the best options for the Reds as they look for cover for Jose Enrique, who has had injury problems in the past, and the fact the 22-year-old can also operate in midfield is an added bonus.

Rodgers wants to take Melgarejo on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent move should it prove to be successful.

Any deal is by no means cut and dried though, as the defender is under contract at Benfica until 2018 so they are in no rush and the Reds would also need a work permit for the player which would delay a switch.

Brendan Rodgers is trying to sign Benfica left back Lorenzo Melgarejo on a season-long loan.

Liverpool are also likely to want to put in a £9m clause giving them first option on making the deal permanent next summer.

Kop boss Rodgers wants to strengthen his left back options and 22-year-old Melgarejo has been converted from being a winger.

But Paraguayan Melgarejo only has one full cap and part of the reason Liverpool want to cover themselves with a loan deal first is because of potential work permit issues.

Liverpool have already made contact as they look to try and turn up the pressure on Jose Enrique with Rodgers anxious to improve his defence.
