BBC: Dowie on surreal title win
Sep 30th 2013, 09:41

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool Ladies striker Natasha Dowie has described the Reds's Women's Super League title win as "surreal".

The WSL top scorer helped her side to a 2-0 victory over Bristol Academy in Sunday's championship decider , but she said the feat "had not sunk in".

"It was nerve-wracking. I didn't enjoy any second of the game until the final whistle blew," said the 25-year-old.

"But to win the title feels unbelievable. To kiss and touch and hold the trophy was just surreal."

Dowie, the niece of former Northern Ireland striker Iain, scored 19 goals as Liverpool finished the season five points clear of Bristol at the top of the FA Women's Super League table.

She got an assist in Liverpool's crucial victory at Halton Stadium, laying the ball off for Katrin Omarsdottir to give the Reds a 2-0 lead.

Louise Fors had earlier put Liverpool ahead from the penalty spot in a dominant display, but Dowie admitted there had been pre-match nerves.

"People try to play it down and say we'll just play our normal game, but we know football's a crazy game and anything can happen," said Dowie.

The England forward experienced FA Cup glory with Everton in 2010, but she said winning the league was her greatest achievement.

"This is the best day of my footballing career. People can go through their whole career and never have this opportunity," Dowie said.

"We deserved to win the title. The football we played this year was really attractive and we were the better team today."

Liverpool manager Matt Beard, who overhauled the squad at the start of the season after major investment from the club's American owners, said: "The players have been fantastic and they deserve it.

"We've a completely new squad that we've built together, and they just deserve the utmost respect and credit for what they've achieved this year.

"It just shows that if you get the right characters in and you've got that mindset and work hard, you can achieve anything.

"Our plan was always to challenge at the top end of the table. We recruited good players with the right character and that has shown throughout the year. They've put in a tremendous shift and deserve their success.

"They have done this themselves by spending time together off the pitch and creating a great team spirit."

"Huge congratulations to Liverpool," added Bristol manager Mark Sampson. "They have been the best team in the division. For us, we've done well overall and now have Champions League football to look forward to."

The FA Women's Super League was launched in April 2011 in a bid to improve the fortunes of the game in England.

Eight teams make up the division, with each having a minimum budget of £140,000, of which £70,000 must be generated by the club with a further £70,000 supplied by the FA.

Echo: Kop can't get enough of Suarez
Sep 30th 2013, 08:24

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

The message was loud and clear. Luis Suarez is back and hope springs eternal for Liverpool.

The Uruguay striker marked his first Premier League start for five months with a clinical double to lift the gloom generated by back-to-back defeats.

Suarez provided the injection of class the Reds required to overcome the challenge of struggling Sunderland.

In doing so he celebrated the birth of his son in style and demonstrated exactly why Brendan Rodgers and the club's owners fought so hard to keep him at Anfield.

As Suarez strolled down the tunnel at the end of a satisfying afternoon's work, Elvis Presley's 'I Can't Help Falling in Love with You' was blaring out across the Stadium of Light. The soundtrack was fitting.

There was a debt that needed to be repaid and strong leadership at Anfield ensured he wouldn't be allowed to move on until he had coughed up.

In the North East he provided a timely instalment.

It could have been a case of once bitten, twice shy where Reds fans are concerned.

But the reality is that Suarez is a player of such exceptional talent that you can't help but delight in the fact that he's wearing your club's colours.

The travelling Kop showed their appreciation for his efforts as his name echoed around the Stadium of Light.

The affection remains strong because the bottom line is Suarez continues to give everything for the cause and is capable of making the difference in Liverpool's challenge for Champions League qualification this term.

Of course this was far from being a one-man mission. Daniel Sturridge was hugely impressive as he emphatically answered those who questioned whether he would continue to flourish following Suarez's return.

There was a school of thought that Sturridge had hit a purple patch in the Uruguayan's absence because he was the focal point of the Reds' attack.

That being the leading man was some kind of ego boost he required in order to perform.

But Sturridge showed he's just as happy being the support act as he unselfishly created both of Suarez's goals.

The £12million man got lucky with his 18th goal for the club in just 24 appearances when referee Howard Webb failed to spot the fact that he had unintentionally converted Steven Gerrard's corner with his arm.

Yet there was plenty to admire about the relentless shift Sturridge put in as he held the ball up, brought teammates into play and was always a willing runner down the channels. It was no surprise that in the closing seconds he lay stricken with cramp.

The Suarez and Sturridge partnership is an exciting one and their heroics ensured Liverpool capitalised on the fact that Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea had all dropped points 24 hours earlier.

Victory lifted Rodgers' side up to second place as the sight of the Black Cats brought them some welcome good fortune after the double dose of disappointment against Southampton and Manchester United.

It was hardly a vintage display as once again standards slipped after the interval and the Reds came close to squandering a 2-0 advantage.

But they dug deep and weathered the storm before Suarez wrapped up the points late on - Liverpool's first second-half goal in some 404 minutes of action.

Rodgers had kept faith with the XI who had started at Old Trafford and Suarez wasted little time making his mark. Latching on to Jordan Henderson's pass, he shrugged off Sebastian Larsson but his right-footer flashed wide.

When Gerrard's 20-yard free-kick was parried by Keiren Westwood, Martin Skrtel followed up to slam in the rebound but the Slovakian's joy was shortlived as the flag was up for offside.

Sunderland's wretched start had cost Paolo Di Canio his job with caretaker boss Kevin Ball looking to stake a claim for the job on a permanent basis.

His players responded to his call to show some pride and fired up by a partisan crowd they caused the Reds plenty of problems.

Sebastian Larsson rattled the bar with a curling free-kick before Rodgers' side broke off the shackles and took the lead in the 28th minute.

There was controversy as it went in off Sturridge's arm but considering that four years ago the Reds were beaten by a beach ball in this fixture, no-one was in the mood to apologise.

Eight minutes later Liverpool doubled their account.

Sturridge turned provider as he controlled Gerrard's raking cross-field pass and sped past Carlos Cuellar down the right. The cross with the outside of his left foot was inch perfect for Suarez to slid it home.

Suarez lifted his shirt to parade a T-shirt with the words 'Welcome Benja' above a picture of his wife and two children with 'Los Amo' (I love them) below it - a tribute to his son who was born on Thursday.

Simon Mignolet clearly suffered from a bout of nerves on his return to the North East as his handling was less than convincing.

However, the Belgian keeper did make a fine save just before the break as he stuck out a boot to deny Craig Gardner.

Rodgers may need to have a re-think about the half-time refreshments in the dressing room because the Reds have made a habit of starting second halves sluggishly and so it proved again.

Within seven minutes the deficit had been halved.

Ki Sung Yueng was given far too much time and space 25 yards out, Mignolet couldn't hold his sweet strike and Emanuele Giaccherini made him pay.

The atmosphere was transformed and it took a sprawling save from Mignolet to prevent Gardner from restoring parity.

Liverpool's sloppiness in possession gave Sunderland hope. The game was far too open and it took some desperate defending to protect their slender lead with Martin Skrtel once again outstanding.

Rodgers' side were reduced to hitting the hosts on the break with Victor Moses and Kolo Toure going close before a slick counter-attack secured victory in the 89th minute.

Mignolet's quick throw found Suarez who burst forward before clipping a lofted pass into the path of Sturridge.

The England striker skipped past Giaccherini and squared for Suarez who swept it left-footed into the net.

It was Suarez's seventh goal in six meetings with Sunderland - how the Black Cats must be sick of the sight of him.

In stark contrast, Kopites just can't get enough.

Guardian: Ladies win Super League
Sep 30th 2013, 08:02

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

For the first time in a decade the engravers will have to put aside their usual stencil and set to work on the unfamiliar italics of Liverpool Ladies, who with this win over Bristol Academy captured the Women's Super League title and a trophy that has, in one form or another, been in Arsenal's hands for 10 years.

Two points behind Liverpool at kick-off, Bristol might also have clinched the title but, as if to underline the scale of the transformation at a club that had finished each of the past two seasons bottom of the table, Liverpool's victory was a comfortable one.

"I'm delighted," said the manager, Matt Beard, still shaking champagne from his hair.

This was the former Chelsea manager's first season on Merseyside and the first fully within the Liverpool set-up for his overhauled team

"When I came to the club our plan was to be in a position to challenge at the top. The players deserve the credit for the shift they've put in."

The crowd was primed for a festival of goals after last month's meeting at Bristol, won 4-3 by Liverpool.

That result might account for a frantic opening in which both defences quickly and without much care for art put an end to fledgling attacking moves. Liverpool, though, were first to settle; Nicole Rolser, the German forward still in fantastic form, afforded the Bristol defenders no such luxury.

The longer the game went on the further Bristol retreated and the more assured the interchanges between Rolser and her teammates became, until after half an hour a Liverpool goal looked certain.

Rolser twice worked the Bristol goalkeeper, Siobhan Chamberlain, before a Fara Williams shot from 35 yards bounced off the outside of the post.

Bristol were increasingly unable to cope and on 35 minutes Rolser wriggled into the area and was upended by Alex Windell. Louise Fors slotted the ball into the bottom right-hand corner for her eighth goal of the season.

A lob from Bristol's Laura Del Rio that dropped beyond the far post two minutes later was virtually the only moment of concern for Rachael Laws in the Liverpool goal.

By contrast Chamberlain had to be on her toes constantly but there was little she could do when, after 78 minutes, Natasha Dowie chested the ball down for Katrin Omarsdottir to strike firm and low from 12 yards out. The crowd rose and roared as if the trophy was being lifted there and then.

"We don't want it to be just a one-off season," Beard said. "We've got an incredibly focused group of players and almost everyone is on a two-year contract, so we'll regroup in the close season and look to go again."

Both sides will play in the Champions League next season while Arsenal watch on.

Telegraph: Rodgers salutes duo
Sep 30th 2013, 08:12

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool have the best strike pair in the Premier League after watching Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge cement their growing partnership.

Suarez scored twice on his return to top flight action after a 10-game ban, both goals set up by Sturridge, who broke the deadlock in a 3-1 win at Sunderland that pushed Rodgers' side back up to second.

The Liverpool manager expects the duo to keep on improving together, and warned their Premier League rivals: "I'm not sure there's a better front two in the league."

He added: "Of course you've got van Persie and Rooney at Manchester United, but our two are up there with the best in the country."

On the Uruguayan striker's return after his lengthy ban and summer of transfer speculation, Rodgers said it was like having "a new signing".

He said: "Luis isn't fazed by much. There's a remarkable mentality and the steel in his mindset, he's just so focused and it's like a new signing with him coming back. It's great for the team and great for the supporters, who deserve to see someone of that quality."

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

The agent of Liverpool target Lucas Digne has denied speculation the Paris St-Germain starlet will depart the French capital for Roma.

Digne, 20, is regarded as one of France's best prospects and PSG, as a result, spent around £13m to sign him from Lille earlier this summer.

Liverpool were one of the clubs interested in the left-back.

Despite moving for big money, Digne has started just two of PSG's eight opening league fixtures this term.

There have been suggestions he might reunite with his former Lille boss Rudi Garcia at Roma, but his representative Mikkel Beck insists he is only thinking about life in Paris.

He told Tuttomercatoweb: "This is not the right time to talk about market rumours. Lucas has just started a new adventure with a prestigious team like PSG and is very happy with how things are going.

"Rudi Garcia obviously knows him well, but at the moment we are absolutely not thinking of a move away from PSG in the future."

Metro: Suarez steel dazzles Rodgers
Sep 29th 2013, 21:43

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Brendan Rodgers praised the mental strength of Luis Suarez as the striker scored twice on his long-awaited Premier League return.

Suarez's brace and a fortuitous opener from Daniel Sturridge secured all three points for Liverpool at managerless Sunderland - who pulled one back through Emanuele Giaccherini - moving the Reds up to second in the table.

It was the Uruguayan's first league outing since getting hit with a ten-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic in April and Rodgers was hugely impressed with the star.

"He is not fazed by much. He has a remarkable mentality," Rodgers said. "His determination, the steel in his mindset, is phenomenal.

"He is just so focused and for us, he is like a new signing, really, coming back into the team.

"Our supporters deserve to see someone of that quality, but his talent deserves to be out on the field rather than sitting in the stand, and that's something that we are working very hard in order to make sure that happens this season."

Suarez's double may have sealed the win but it was Sturridge who set the Reds on their way, bundling Steven Gerrard's cross over the line with his arm in the 28th minute.

Rodgers said with a smile: "He needs to work on his heading, I think. He meant to head it and it missed his head and hit his arm and went in, and if you watch it again, if you look at the reaction of the Sunderland players, there's not one reacted to it being handball."

Despite the defeat, Sunderland's interim boss Kevin Ball was able to take positives from the game.
He said: "I'd be a fool if I hadn't been encouraged by [the performance]. Yes, they would have liked to have got a result today, but it definitely wasn't for the want of trying."

Telegraph: Liverpool end Arsenal dominance
Sep 29th 2013, 21:51

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

A new era dawned in women's football yesterday as Liverpool, with a 2-0 victory against Bristol Academy on the final day of the FA Women's Super League season, became the first club in a decade to deny Arsenal the top-flight title.

A 37th-minute Louise Fors penalty and a 15-yard strike by the Icelandic midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir 11 minutes from time gave the Reds a deserved win against Bristol Academy.

The visitors would have been champions themselves had they won at Widnes' Halton Stadium.

Fors's penalty came after Nicole Rolser was fouled by Alex Windell. Omarsdottir struck after England's Natasha Dowie, Iain's niece, had chested down a deep free-kick.

Arsenal, 2-1 winners at Everton, had to settle for third place after dominating the English club game since the turn of the century - this is only the second time since 2001 that they have not won the league (the exception was Fulham in 2004 after they briefly went full-time).

The Gunners have traditionally had by far the best financial backing from their parent club, but they have been overtaken in cash terms this year by Liverpool, whose investment is close to the £1 million mark, and Chelsea.

Next season Manchester City, set to replace Doncaster Rovers Belles in the WSL, will up the ante still further.

Liverpool manager Matt Beard, who took over a team that had finished bottom last season, said: "We've not had the biggest budget in the league, but we got our recruitment right and the players have been superb. It's been tough, but it could be even harder next year - Arsenal will strengthen and Manchester City joining the league means there will be more money coming in."

Arsenal will strengthen, confirmed general manager Vic Akers, who formed the club in 1987 and as manager led them to their greatest triumphs before stepping aside in 2009.

Akers, however, is not happy with they way that Doncaster have been deposed by Manchester City, who have been placed in the top flight due to aspects such as marketing and administration facilities rather than footballing reasons.

Akers said: "We will have an improved group next year, but we can only go so far in terms of finance. We're not in the Manchester City situation. With respect, they landed in the top flight through having loads of money."

As well as surrendering the title, Arsenal's failure to qualify for the Champions League through a top two finish means they must become European champions this season if they are to compete in the competition for what would be an 11th year in succession.

They are at present in the last 32 and face a trip to Kazahkstan.

Liverpool and Bristol have guaranteed places.

Mark Sampson, the Bristol manager, said: "We've finished runners in the FA Cup as well as the WSL and reaching the Champions League, so we've achieved way over and above expectations. The girls should be extremely proud of their efforts."

It was the end of an era at the wrong end of the table too as bottom team Doncaster, the only club to have been in the top flight since its inception in 1991, bowed out with a 3-0 defeat by Birmingham. Lincoln won 2-0 at Chelsea to leave Blues second-bottom.

Echo: Ladies win title
Sep 29th 2013, 21:38

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

So from worst to first, the mission has been completed. Triumphantly.

Liverpool Ladies claimed a 2-0 victory over Bristol Academy Women to secure the FA Women's Super League crown in their final match of a memorable season on Sunday afternoon.

Manager Matt Beard's team went into the game knowing that just a point against their opponents would be enough to win the title for the very first time.

Bristol needed all three points to deny the home side and ensure the silverware would be going back to the West Country.

Liverpool's players spoke in the week of wanting the Anfield Kop to be transported to Halton's Select Security Stadium.

And they weren't disappointed as the Reds' fans in attendance gave a terrific rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone prior to kick-off.

Liverpool settled first and were inches away from taking an eighth-minute lead through Louise Fors.

She latched onto a through ball inside the box and fired a left-footed effort that just went past Bristol keeper Siobhan Chamberlain's left upright.

Lively Nicole Rolser was causing most of the problems for Bristol's rearguard, showing neat skill as well as having an eye for goal.

So it was no surprise when she was at the heart of the breakthrough goal for Liverpool nine minutes before the interval.

Her trickery just inside the penalty area drew a foul from Alex Windell and a penalty was awarded.

Up stepped Fors to drill a perfect spot-kick left-footed into the bottom left-hand corner of Chamberlain's net.

Bristol nearly found themselves back in the game shortly after conceding when Laura de  Rio saw her lobbed effort go over Liverpool keeper Rachael Laws but miss the target, much to the home side's relief.

Trailing at the break, Bristol knew they had score twice to win the title.

But Liverpool's defence stood up well to the visitors' attacks and keeper Laws was rarely called into action.
American-born midfielder Amanda Da Costa could have settled things 20 minutes from time but she headed wide when well placed deep inside the penalty area.

The spurned opportunity, however, was not to prove costly.

Twelve minutes from time Liverpool tacked on an insurance goal when England striker Natasha Dowie cleverly set up Icelandic star Katrin Omarsdottir who cut inside the penalty area before firing an unstoppable shot past Chamberlain to the huge delight of the Reds' players on the pitch and the management team and fans off it.

From that point, Liverpool eased their way home before the celebrations really began in style at the final whistle.

First goalscorer Fors described the team's  success as "an amazing feeling".

Teammate, Da Costa, said: "It is an amazing group of girls. They are my friends and my family."

Thrilled Liverpool boss Beard said: "They have worked hard all year. They really deserve the title.

"The penalty took the pressure off us a little bit because we had one or two chances before then that maybe we should have scored and it was important to get that first goal.

"I'm delighted, I'm chuffed for the players because all season they've been fantastic.

"They deserve that, unbelievable, great performance today. I felt we thoroughly deserved the three points.

"We've a completely new squad that we've built together and they just deserve the utmost respect and credit for what they've achieved this year.

"It just shows that if you get the right characters in and you've got that mindset and work hard, you can achieve anything."

And an overjoyed Dowie added: "It has been a fairytale. This is the best moment of my football career.

"I honestly believe we deserve to be champions. We want to be like Arsenal and dominate. It is a dream come true to win the title."

Bristol coach Mark Sampson was full of praise for his defeated side but conceded Liverpool deserved their win.

He said: "We've achieved an incredible amount this year. We've got to a cup final and we've pushed Liverpool, the eventual champions and worthy champions, right the way to the wire, and I think myself, all directors and all supporters are really proud of the players' efforts.

"They're a good group and if they stick together they can achieve a lot."

BBC: Liverpool beat Bristol to win title
Sep 30th 2013, 07:56

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool Ladies clinched their first Women's Super League title by beating Bristol in the end-of-season decider.

The visitors started the match two points behind the Reds and needed a win to snatch the championship as the campaign went down to the wire.

But the hosts dominated from the start, taking the lead through a Louise Fors penalty after Nicole Rolser was fouled.

Katrin Omarsdottir's fine finish sealed the 2-0 win to end Arsenal's nine-year dominance in the women's game.

The Gunners won seven consecutive Women's Premier League titles from 2004 and finished top in the first two seasons of the WSL.

But these two sides usurped the Londoners to battle it out at the top of table all season, culminating in a winner-takes-all encounter at the Halton Stadium.

The triumph completes a remarkable turnaround for Liverpool, who finished bottom of the table for the last two seasons.

But after huge investment from the club's American owners, manager Matt Beard overhauled the squad for the 14-game league season and saw his side lose just twice.

The pre-match scenario invited comparisons with the dramatic finale to the men's First Division title in 1989, when George Graham's Arsenal travelled to Liverpool needing a 2-0 win, which they famously sealed with Michael Thomas's last-minute goal.

Any winning scoreline would have done for Bristol, but the hosts made the stronger start and the influential Rolser curled one effort over before being denied by a superb save from goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain.

It was no surprise when the German forward was involved in the opening goal, drawing a foul after twisting and turning in the penalty area, with Fors lashing the spot-kick past Chamberlain.

Bristol created a rare chance moments later when Laura del Rio tried to lob Rachael Laws, but although the Liverpool keeper was beaten the Spaniard's shot rolled inches wide.

The visitors have made a habit of coming from behind this season, but they struggled to break down Liverpool's defence as the Reds sat back after the break.

It was the home side who had the better chances on the counter-attack, with Amanda da Costa sending a simple header over the bar after finding herself unmarked 10 yards out.

The decisive second goal came 10 minutes from time when Natasha Dowie laid off a free-kick to Omarsdottir, who took a touch before rifling past Chamberlain from 15 yards.

In Sunday's other matches, Arsenal recorded a 2-1 victory at Everton to cement their third-place finish, Lincoln won 2-0 at Chelsea while Birmingham eased to a 3-0 success against Doncaster.

Footy Latest: Reds ready to move for Argentine
Sep 29th 2013, 09:41

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is reported to be following Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore with renewed zeal and may make a move for him when the transfer window reopens in January. News of the Reds' interest in the Argentine has come following reports of the player growing disillusioned with life at Parc des Princes.

Pastore's agent Marcelo Simonian has revealed that his client has been unhappy at PSG this season and hinted of him being open to a possibility of a move. He said: "In football there are always ups and downs. He has been happy there, but now is not the time for nostalgia. We will see what happens in the next few months."

The Reds are believed to be monitoring the progress of the 24 year old for quite some time now. According to reports in Gazzetta Dello Sport, Rodgers is confident of landing Pastore in January despite interest in the player from the likes of AC Milan and Napoli.

It is reported that PSG may consider doing business if Liverpool agree to pay around £17m for the Argentine.
