Teamtalk: Reds linked with starlet

Liverpool target Daniel Amartey has refused to rule out a possible move to the Premier League.

The 18-year-old Ghanaian plies his trade for Swedish side Djurgardens and has attracted the interest of several teams in Europe.

When asked about a potential move to England, he told Skysports.com: "I've always dreamt of playing in the same league as my hero Michael Essien."

His agent, Patrick Moerk, believes that Amartey has bags of potential.

"There are big clubs interested," he told Fotbollskanalen.se.

"The last time I experienced something similar was with (CSKA Moscow midfielder) Rasmus Elm.

"But Amartey is only 18 years old, and has impressed as a defensive midfielder and central midfielder."

Echo: Anfield legend retires from coaching
Oct 31st 2013, 13:53

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool legend Ray Clemence has announced his retirement from the England team coaching set up.

The former Anfield goalkeeper, 65, will step down from his role with The FA as Head of National Teams this month.

As a player Clem helped the Reds to three European Cups as well as five domestic title triumphs, an FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.

Then with Tottenham Hotspur, he went on to add another FA Cup and UEFA Cup to his haul of silverware.

He began his national team coaching career with Glenn Hoddle in 1996 and has worked for every England manager ever since.

In recent years, he has taken a wider role helping with the progressions of youngsters from U16 level through to the senior team.

Clemence said: "I have been lucky to have had 47 years in this wonderful game, of which 17 of these have been spent at The FA. I have been fortunate to meet and work with some wonderful people at all levels throughout my time here.

"I have enjoyed working with great players and also seeing young players start in the U16 development team and progress through those teams to the senior side.

"There are some frustrations working in The FA, but it is full of hard working dedicated staff who are all trying to improve the state of the game.

"I leave The FA with many happy memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Sir Trevor Brooking said: "Ray has been an excellent ambassador not only to The FA, but to football in this country, and in particular in elevating specialist courses for the goalkeeping position.

"His standards both as a player and as a coach have been relentlessly high, and particularly in my time I have seen his impact on a succession of young players who have come through and established themselves at the highest level.

"We wish him the very best in retirement, and he will always be welcome back here at Wembley."

Mirror: Reds line up starlet
Oct 31st 2013, 09:13

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wants to snap up Ghanaian midfielder Daniel Amartey when the transfers window reopens.

Rodgers' spies have checked on the teenager, who plays for Djurgarden in Sweden's capital Stockholm, and the Reds are keen to do business in January.

Amartey, a first-teamer at just 18, is interested in joining the Anfield giants and may head over for talks soon.

Liverpool have been recruiting young talent in the past few months and think Amartey merits splashing out a fee of around £1.5 million.

The starlet is due to have an operation on his hand next month but could be sorting out his long-term future soon after.

The deal would see Amartey loaned back to Djurgaarden until he qualifies for a work permit.

He is currently an U20s cap, but is expected to get a full call-up soon.

Express: Rams set valuation
Oct 31st 2013, 10:23

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Derby County have placed a £12million valuation on Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United target Will Hughes.

Arsene Wenger, Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes are tracking the England Under-21 international ahead of the January transfer window.

And with Hughes continuing to impress at Derby under new manager Steve McClaren it appears only a matter of time before the 18-year-old seals a move to the top flight.

However, the Rams are adamant that their star man will not be sold on the cheap and are demanding at least £12m for his services.

According to reports Derby chief executive Sam Rush believes Hughes is worth the same amount as Manchester United's Wilfried Zaha - who left Crystal Palace this summer for an initial £10m rising to £15m.

Liverpool have scouted the Derby academy graduate extensively this season, but Arsenal and United are ready to rival them for the talented midfielder.

McClaren admits the Championship club face a battle to hold on to Hughes, recently saying: "Our job is to make sure he makes it.

"Eventually he will be too good. What we need is players coming through to replace him."

Echo: No Reds offer for Hughes
Oct 31st 2013, 09:07

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool currently have no plans to table a bid for Derby County's Will Hughes in January.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the highly-rated 18-year-old midfielder.

Andre Wisdom's season-long loan switch to the Championship outfit has fuelled speculation that Hughes could head in the opposite direction for a fee of around £15million.

However, the ECHO understands that despite having sent scouts to Derby matches and monitored Hughes' progress, Liverpool are not preparing to table an offer.

Surrey-born Hughes made his Derby first-team debut at the age of 16 and went on to become the second youngest player to represent England U21s.

Telegraph: Derby set price for star
Oct 31st 2013, 09:03

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Derby County will demand a minimum £12 million for England U21 international Will Hughes in the January transfer window.

Hughes has emerged as one of the most sought-after young midfielders in the country and has been scouted frequently by Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal over the last 12 months.

But Derby are determined to retain the teenager for at least the remainder of this season and will attempt to resist offers from Premier League clubs.

Derby's American owners have refused to place an official price tag on the 18-year-old but it is understood chief executive Sam Rush will not entertain any offers below £12m.

Rush was previously chief operating officer with the highly respected Wasserman Media Group agency and is ready to take a combative approach to clubs showing interest in the New Year.

Wilfried Zaha was sold to Manchester United last January for an initial £10m, rising to £15m based on appearances and success, and Derby believe Hughes is worth a similar amount.

Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, is a huge admirer and has dispatched chief scout Dave Fallows to regularly watch him this season.

Rodgers is not considering Hughes as a priority target for January, however, and will only make a move if rival clubs table a serious offer.

Derby manager Steve McClaren has admitted he will leave Pride Park at some stage in the future and said: "Our job is to make sure he makes it.

"Eventually he will be too good. What we need behind that is players coming through to replace him."

Clubcall: Rams try to keep Reds target
Oct 31st 2013, 09:25

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Derby are determined to keep hold of midfield ace Will Hughes in January and have slapped a £12million fee on the Liverpool target.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has been monitoring Hughes's progress for the past 18 months and he is prepared to make a move but the Championship club want to keep him until the end of the season at least and have put a big price tag on him.

The England U21 star is also wanted by Manchester United and Arsenal but Liverpool are thought to lead the chase for the highly-rated 18-year-old but will only make a move in the New Year if one of their rivals does the same, otherwise Rodgers will leave it until the summer.

Derby are resigned to losing him but do not want him to go midway through the season.

Daily Post: 'Duo are best on the continent'
Oct 31st 2013, 11:05

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

AUTHOR: MARK LAWRENSON

Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge aren't just the best forward partnership in the Premier League. They are arguably the most lethal attacking duo in Europe.

I'm confident in saying that because there aren't too many leading teams who still play with two up front.

Many play with just the one in attack, or with one player central in what is ostensibly a front three. There are even those who persist with the infamous 'false nine' with no striker whatsoever.

Football goes through phases in terms of  tactics and formations, but I always maintain your way of playing is dictated by your players.

This is where Brendan Rodgers has been  clever. He's looked at what players he has, and put three across the back to accommodate Suarez and Sturridge up top.

The partnership is still a fledgling one but their form is fantastic. Suarez may have got a hat-trick against West Brom but Sturridge's goal was as good as anything you will see this season.

It is rare for two strikers to be playing  together and both be on top of their game. When strikers are on form, it is very difficult to handle them.

I'm sure one or two of the boys in the dressing room will be ribbing Suarez this week of his desire to sign for Arsenal during the summer, with Liverpool set to visit the Emirates.

I don't think it matters that Arsenal and Liverpool have not played many of the leading contenders so far this season. Everybody has to play the same teams, and you still need to beat them no matter when.

Until recently, Saturday's game could have been regarded as a clash between two teams battling for fourth place.

Now, though, I am not so sure.

I've been really impressed by Arsenal. The signing of Mathieu Flamini and Mezut Ozil has transformed their game, and the only real fly in the ointment is if Olivier  Giroud is injured between now and January.

I cannot see Arsenal being out of the top  four this season. They are in the  ascendancy, you can sense it, Arsene Wenger knows it and the players know it. However, they still have the Achilles heel of  their defence. They can tend to go gung-ho and they don't exactly circle the wagons. If you put Arsenal's defence under the cosh for any great period of time, they always give the impression they could buckle.

It means there is no point in Liverpool sitting back and defending. Everybody has seen the league is wide open to win, and teams are going away from home aiming for a victory.

Liverpool can get something from the game. They have great confidence, and because of Sturridge and Suarez they have the players who can occupy Arsenal's  defence.

By the way, I thought Sir Alex Ferguson  was a bit out of order picking on Jordan Henderson in his book. He was an easy  target.

Ferguson was on about Henderson's gait and the way he runs, but so what? Does it  matter?

And then there's what he said about  Steven Gerrard. I just wonder whether Fergie is still a bit miffed that Gerrard showed no great inclination to sign for United. Not everybody wants to, you know.

talkSPORT: Rodgers in left-back link

The agent of Steaua Bucharest defender Iasmin Latovlevici insists he would not be surprised if Liverpool made an offer for his client.

Rodgers is  thought to be on the lookout for a left-sided defender and Florin Iacob, who represents Latovlevici, says the Anfield side are monitoring the Romania international.

He told Romanian TV channel Sport.ro TV: "There is the interest of Monaco. But I was also contacted by bigger clubs and no-one should be surprised if Liverpool show interest. This I will not confirm, but it would not be a surprise."

Latovlevici, 27, is in his fourth season at Steaua and has earned eight caps for Romania since making his international bow in 2011.

CaughtOffside: Reds to rival Spurs for winger
Oct 30th 2013, 10:32

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are now set to go head to head with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to win the signature of highly rated FC Basel wide man Mohamed Salah, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The coveted Egypt international has been with the Swiss champions since April 2012, when Salah moved to the St Jacob-Park from El-Mokawloon SC on a four-year deal.

And in the intervening period, the 21-year-old has really gone on to catch the eye for Basel, and none more so than in this current campaign in which Salah has been one of the club's most impressive performers, both domestically and in Europe too.

In total, Salah has registered six goals and five assists in total in his 20 matches in all competitions for the Swiss giants, including two strikes and four assists in just 13 league outings for the club.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian has also been in outstanding form for his country too, netting six times in their qualifying campaign for next summer's Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

As a result, it is now understood that the Merseyside giants are planning on making a bid for Salah come the turn of the year, although with a contract with Basel that lasts until 2016, it is expected his club will seek at least £15 million for his services.

FootballFanCast: Reds plot move for Argentinian ace
Oct 30th 2013, 10:29

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are pondering a move for Argentinian attacking midfielder Juan Iturbe, according to reports from CalcioMercato.

The 20-year-old has been in impressive form of late for Serie A surprise package Verona after joining the club on loan from Porto.

Although Jorginho - a target for the Reds, Arsenal and Chelsea - has been stealing the headlines for the Italian side, Iturbe has been just as impressive.

His fine displays have alerted Brendan Rodgers, who is keen to build a squad capable of challenging for league titles and European qualification over the coming years.

Iturbe has netted twice in four starts for Verona this term, and is thought to be on the verge of breaking into Argentina's international set-up.

Able to play all across the front line and in a more reserved role, the youngster's versatility appeals to Rodgers, who sees him as an ideal backup option for Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez.

With the South American having penned a season-long loan agreement with Verona a move for his signature next summer is more plausible than a swoop over the winter.

Liverpool are far from short on attacking players as it stands, but Rodgers may look to free up room to add Iturbe to his ranks during the coming transfer windows.
