talkSPORT: Sergi Roberto profile
Nov 5th 2013, 12:17

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Reports in England this week claim that Liverpool and Tottenham are pursuing Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto. Wrestling the Catalan from his club's grasp could be difficult however, and even more so with Manchester City, Real Madrid and AC Milan said to be keeping tabs on him. talkSPORT's Transfer Spotlight has more...

Name: Sergi Roberto
Date of birth: February 7, 1992
Birthplace: Reus, Spain
Club: FC Barcelona
Position: Midfielder
International appearances: 8 (Spain U21) / 2 (Catalonia)
Honours: Copa del Rey (2011/12), Supercopa de Espana (2013)

What's the latest?
Sergi Roberto has been earmarked as the future of the Barcelona midfield for some years now, and the youngster's path to the first team seemed to be even clearer when Thiago Alcantara made an unexpected exit from the Catalan side last summer. Things haven't been so easy for Roberto however, and he isn't playing as much as he would like to this season. Regardless, agent Josep Maria Orobitg has made it clear that his future is in the hands of the club, and it is highly unlikely that Barca would sanction a sale. There could be some hope for Liverpool or Tottenham if they are willing to take a leaf out of Everton's book and attempt a loan move however, as Gerard Deulofeu, a player of similar stature from the Barcelona youth set up, is currently at Goodison Park temporarily.

Did you know?

1) Roberto started out with Nastic de Tarragona, a side based near his hometown of Reus that had a recent spell in the Spanish top flight. He joined Barcelona's academy as a 14-year-old in 2004.

2) In the 2009/10 season he made his debut with Barcelona's B team in the Spanish third division at the age of 17. He went on to play 23 games for Luis Enrique's side that year, helping them to achieve promotion to the second tier.

3) With Thiago's permanent promotion to the Barcelona first team, Roberto became the playmaker of choice at Barcelona B, donning the number 10 shirt. His tendency to make bursting runs into the box led to comparisons with Cesc Fabregas.

4) The youngster's first taste of senior Barcelona action came in the 2010/11 pre-season, when he made his unofficial debut. His official debut came in a Copa del Rey clash against Cueta in November 2010, while most notably, his Champions League debut came in a 2-0 semi-final away win against Real Madrid in 2011.

5) In this year's pre-season he was officially promoted to the first team, and has since made three appearances for Barca in La Liga. He has often missed out on a place in matchday squads, however.

They say
"All of the Barcelona coaches and sporting directors that have observed Roberto's progress believe he is one of the players destined to make the first team. His agent constantly reiterates that he has a contract until 2015 and a €20m buyout clause. Roberto wants to play with Barca, but he also wants to play, and isn't." Mundo Deportivo on Roberto's situation.

Echo: One more honour for Carra
Nov 5th 2013, 10:23

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Jamie Carragher collected probably his last football award last night - and it was a prestigious one.

The recently retired Liverpool FC defender collected the Premier League Player of the Year title at the North West Football Awards.

The award is voted for by the fans and Carragher was at Lancashire Cricket Club's Point Conference Centre to receive the accolade.

Carragher, now a successful Sky TV pundit, saw off competition from Everton left-back, Leighton Baines, Manchester United's England midfielder Michael Carrick and City defender Pablo Zabaleta.

It's the second consecutive season this particular award has gone to Anfield after Martin Skrtel's success at the 2012 Awards night.

Anfield starlet Jerome Sinclair, who made his senior debut in the Capital One Cup at West Bromwich Albion last season, was named Rising Star of the Year, while there were also strong Anfield links to two of the other individual awards.

Former Red John Welsh, now at Preston, won the League One Player of the Year award while Bolton's Jay Spearing, who spent last season on loan at the Reebok before sealing a permanent move from Anfield, was the Championship's Player of the Year.

Everton, whose VIP guests included manager Roberto Martinez and Sir Philip Carter, were also honoured.

Indeed, it was a magical night for Toni Duggan, who became the Women's Player of the Year recipient, while the Goodison Park club's community department was rewarded for its hard work with two notable honours.

The Blues collected the Community Club of the Year award and jointly received the Community Initiative of the Year award with Bolton.

The Toffees were also honoured for Best Marketing Campaign, while the Reds received the CSR Campaign of the Year award and Best Club Sponsorship Engagement/Partnership.

Joining the Award winners were a family whose name is synonymous with sport in the North West - the Nevilles.

Brothers Phil and Gary spent their entire playing career in the Premier League with Manchester United and then in Phil's case, at Everton.

Phil is now on United's coaching staff; Gary combines his role as a successful TV pundit with his job on the England coaching staff. Mum Jill has also given sterling service to the game as company secretary at Bury for more than 20 years and who, in 2012, was granted the freedom of Bury for her loyal service.

The Northwest Football Awards, managed by Journey9, was hosted by BBC Television's Football Focus presenter, Dan Walker, and broadcast live for the first time on BBC Radio Lancashire, BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Radio Merseyside.

Independent: Reds consider Roberto
Nov 5th 2013, 13:08

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool and Tottenham are believed to be considering a move for Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto, according to reports in Spain.

Roberto is currently out of favour under manager Gerardo Martino, despite being touted as having a bright future - one of many shining lights to develop through the Catalans' youth ranks.

However, Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo are reporting that both Tottenham and Liverpool are keen on signing the 21-year-old, and have already made enquiries to the player's agent as they look to strengthen their attack.

One potential stumbling block would be the asking price though, with the Spanish league champions reluctant to sell one of their young talents. Roberto does have a release clause in his contract, and a potential suitor would need to cough up €20m (£16.8m) to lure him away from the Nou Camp.

Roberto has been with the club since he joined the academy in 2006, making his first-team debut four years later, although he has become frustrated with his lack of opportunities having made just six league appearances since then.

Italian side AC Milan have also enquired over the attacking midfielder's availability, although the price could pose a major problem in their attempts to sign Roberto. One solution would be to fund the move with the sale of young forward Stephan El Shaarawy, with reported interest coming from Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester City.

talkSPORT: In-form Iturbe in demand
Nov 5th 2013, 16:23

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool will battle Inter Milan and Verona to sign Argentine winger Juan Manuel Iturbe.

The 20-year-old, who joined Porto from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno in 2010, is currently flourishing on loan at Verona, where he has scored twice in seven Serie A appearances.

The terms of Iturbe's loan deal allow the Italians to purchase him outright at the end of the season - but it is unclear if they will be able to afford his £11.75m fee.

And Iturbe's agent Claudio Pasqualin believes Verona may look to split his ownership rights with Inter Milan next summer.

He said: "Iturbe is a surprise and if he can sustain himself he will become a very important player, emulating the feats of Alexis Sanchez.

"It will not be a problem for Verona to find a partner for his signature. I think it might be Inter Milan, but he must first prove himself this season."

Former Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Sissoko is set to join Anderlecht following a successful trial with the Belgian side.

talkSPORT told you last week that the Mali international, 28, was looking to earn a contract at Anderlecht having left Paris St-Germain earlier this year.

He was tipped to join Reading but failed to strike a deal with the Championship club.

And the former Anfield ace has revealed he is on the verge of signing terms with Anderlecht.

He told La Derniere Heure: "The trial went well. I'm not ready to take to the field, but this may happen soon. I want to play for this team."

ClubCall: Defender in talks?
Nov 4th 2013, 10:45

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a move for Djurgarden IF defender Daniel Amartey and the player claims talks are underway.

The 18-year-old has caught the eye of many clubs across Europe with some outstanding displays and Rodgers is planning a cut-price swoop on the youngster who is seen as one for the future.

Although his agent would not comment on reports that he has been linked with Liverpool, the player himself was not as coy and he admitted he would be delighted if a move came off.

"I have been in contact with the Liverpool management," he said.

"I hope we can sort a transfer out - it's a great club to play for."

Amartey's agent, Patrick Dark, would not comment on any Liverpool approach but did claim there was plenty of interest in the Ghana-born defender who can also operate in midfield.

InsideFutbol: Reds in Iturbe race
Nov 3rd 2013, 13:56

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Spanish giants Barcelona and English heavyweights Liverpool are set to collide in the transfer market as both clubs keep their eyes transfixed on promising youngster Juan Iturbe.

Iturbe, dubbed the next Lionel Messi in some quarters, is currently on loan at newly-promoted Serie A side Hellas Verona and has done much to help them reach fifth place in the table so far.

Indeed, the Argentine has already scored two goals and provided an assist in just six appearances for the Italian minnows, despite his young age of 20.

Both Barcelona and Liverpool are keen to continue tracking the starlet and they are prepared to talk to Iturbe's parent club FC Porto to seal a deal in future.

The Camp Nou outfit, however, are believed to be ahead in the race to sign the young Argentine, according to Portuguese daily A Bola, with a potential offer of €15m mooted.

For their part, Liverpool have already sent scouts to Verona to signal their interest and to inform Barcelona they are not alone in chasing Iturbe's signature.

Iturbe's current contract with Porto is set to expire in 2016.

Mirror: Ghana striker to be sold
Nov 3rd 2013, 08:30

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Andre Ayew will be a £10million target for Premier League clubs in the next transfer window.

The Ghana international front man looks certain to be sold by Olympique Marseille after their dreadful show in Europe and a dismal start to the domestic campaign.

They are bottom of their Champions League group that includes Arsenal, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund.

Marseille have lost all three European matches they have played - two of them at home. That even leaves qualification for the Europa League almost out of reach.

Now Marseille look ready to cash in on Ayew with both Liverpool and Newcastle interested.

Ayew has 18 months left on his contract and Marseille acknowledge that this is the time to sell.

If they leave any decision until the end of the season, there is the risk that Ayew will decide to let his deal run down and leave the French club on a free transfer.

Echo: Why Mignolet is keeping calm
Nov 2nd 2013, 13:12

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Simon Mignolet is as calm and composed off the pitch as he is on it. They are the qualities which have enabled the Belgian goalkeeper to make such a seamless transition from Sunderland to Liverpool FC.

Some wilt under the pressure and expectation of life at Anfield but Mignolet has flourished following his £9million move.

The sizeable challenge of filling Pepe Reina's boots hasn't fazed him and his dramatic debut, when his stunning late penalty save denied Stoke City's Jonathan Walters, provided the perfect launchpad for his Reds career.

Mignolet has been a model of consistency for Brendan Rodgers' side so far, but there is no danger of the 25-year-old resting on his laurels as he prepares to make his 100th Premier League outing in tonight's crunch clash with leaders Arsenal.

"Penalty saves don't happen often but when it happens on your debut it only makes things easier and it gave me confidence," Mignolet told the ECHO.

"It showed the fans at Anfield that I am capable of doing those things.

"Liverpool fans throughout the years have always loved their goalies and so far things have gone well. It is always nice to have the support of the fans behind you and they have been very good to me.

"From day one when I arrived at the club I felt really welcome, not only inside the dressing room but also around Melwood. Every single person helped me to get settled inside the club and also in the city.

"Here at Liverpool it can happen that you play for 80 minutes without touching the ball then you have to be ready for when the shot comes. Brendan wants his goalkeeper to start the attacks and play from the back, while at Sunderland it was more about saving shots.

"I just try to keep concentration and stay focused on the job I'm asked to do. It is up to me to keep and maintain that level and make sure I produce the performances.

"There is always going to be competition for places. It was the same when I came over from Belgium to Sunderland and Craig Gordon was their No 1. When I signed for Liverpool, Pepe was still there and even though he has gone now, there is still big competition with Brad Jones and Danny Ward.

"I just have to look at myself and make sure I train the best that I can day in, day out. Competition keeps you sharp. It can only make you better as a goalkeeper."

Mignolet admits Liverpool head for the Emirates full of confidence following last weekend's 4-1 thrashing of West Brom. You won't catch the shot-stopper making any bold predictions about what Rodgers' men could go on to achieve this season, but he  views tonight's showdown with  the Gunners as a golden chance for the Reds to showcase just  how far they have come.

"When you come into a club you want to win games and you want to do well. We have got off to a good start but now it's a case of making sure we continue in that way," said Mignolet, who was speaking at the launch of Battlefield 4.

"We have a very good squad who work well together and we have to make sure we keep the same level of fitness and the same professional attitude.

"It's not important now to be thinking where we are going to end up at the end of the season. We can only look to the next game and make sure we get out of that what we want.

"We've got a big game to look forward to and the job in hand is to do well at Arsenal.

"I don't really think we should see this game as a test, I think we should see it as an opportunity to do well. It's first against third in the league and we could go back to the top of the table."

It promises to be a busy night for Mignolet and opposite number Wojciech Szczesny.

Liverpool (57) and Arsenal (53) are the top-flight's highest scorers in 2013 and the stage is set for an open game.

Much will depend on the Reds' ability to deal with the attacking threat of the likes of Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey.

If they can be contained then Mignolet knows Liverpool have the firepower in the form of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to secure only a second win in 10 trips to the Emirates.

"Arsenal are a very good team and have had a very good start as well," he said.

"They have players scoring goals like Ramsey, while Ozil has come in and given them that ability to create chances.

"We know they have a lot of quality in the team, but for us it's more about looking at ourselves and what we do. We've been working on things in training this week and hopefully we can put that into practise.

"Everybody knows the quality that Luis and Daniel have and they have a very good partnership. Hopefully they can keep doing that throughout the season.

"We know that they are always going to create and score goals so it is important for us to make sure we don't give away any chances at the other end."

Suarez is looking to become the first Liverpool player ever to score at Arsenal in three successive league visits, while Sturridge could equal the club record of scoring in seven successive away league games - a feat last achieved by Sam English in 1933.

Mignolet is just relieved that these days he only has to face the prolific double act at Melwood.

"They are the best strikers I've ever come up against," he said.

"If you see the chances they create and the quality of their finishing, not only in the games but also in training, you can see what kind of level they are at.

"Being a goalkeeper up against them every day in training can only make you a better goalie.

"Touch wood, Daniel hasn't chipped me yet like he did against West Brom. But they always score good goals in the finishing drills.

"They are in great form. If Luis and Daniel score then so much the better but for us the most important thing is to be winning games.

"Things are going well but a good start to the season doesn't mean anything if you don't build on it. We have to make sure we keep doing the things we are doing and keep playing  in the same manner."

Metro: Starlet confirms transfer talks
Nov 2nd 2013, 20:06

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Djurgarden defender Daniel Amartey has confirmed he is in talks with Liverpool over a January move to Anfield.

The 18-year-old centre back, who can also play in midfield, was picked up by Reds scouts playing for Ghana's U20 team.

And after reading lengthy reports on the player, Brendan Rodgers has given the green light for Liverpool to move to sign him.

It's thought that a £1.5million deal is in the pipeline, and Amartey has confirmed he has already spoken to Rodgers about a move.

"I have been in contact with the Liverpool management," he revealed.

"I hope we can sort a transfer out - it's a great club to play for."

Amartey has already made 22 first-team appearances for Djurgarden and Liverpool are hopeful he could slot into their squad in the new year.

However, they will likely face a battle to win a work permit for the player, as he is not a full Ghana international.

Djurgarden hope to be able to keep Amartey on-loan if a work permit can't be agreed for him to move to the Premier League straight away.
