Echo: Reds interested in loan move

Liverpool FC are interested in taking Benfica's Lorenzo Melgarejo on a season-long deal as they look to add cover in the left-back position.

The Reds have contacted the Portuguese side to express their interest in signing the Paraguayan, and are hopeful they will be allowed to take the 22-year-old on an initial loan deal, with the option to make the move permanent should it be a success.

The ECHO revealed last week that Valencia's Aly Cissokho was a potential target, with Liverpool eager to add senior cover for Jose Enrique.

And Reds boss Brendan Rodgers and his recruitment team believe Melgarejo, who played for Benfica in the Europa League final against Chelsea last season, represents a more viable option than Cissokho in terms of both salary and playing time. They feel Melgarejo also has the added bonus of being able to play as an advanced left-sided midfielder.

Benfica have signed two left backs, Silvio and Bruno Cortez, on loan this summer, and it is expected that they would be willing to allow Melgarejo to leave, even though he is contracted to the Lisbon-based club until 2018.

Liverpool would, however, need to obtain a work permit for the player, and are not anticipating a speedy conclusion to any deal.

talkSPORT: Barca ace in demand

Liverpool target Alexis Sanchez is wanted by Napoli, according to reports in Italy.

The Barcelona striker has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp after failing to hit the heights since moving to the club from Udinese in 2011.

And Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a move for Sanchez, but Napoli are considering adding him to their impressive list of summer signings.

Rafael Benitez has already completed deals for Gonzalo Higuain, Pepe Reina, Raul Albiol, Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens, but is still keen to strengthen his side ahead of an expected title push.

And Sanchez is reportedly an option if they fail to agree a deal for Porto's Jackson Martinez, who is their number one target.

InsideFutbol: Ajax star on future

Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has insisted he is not necessarily looking to join a club that play in the Champions League if he leaves the Amsterdam ArenA.

The Belgium centre-back has just one year left to run on his contract with the Dutch champions and is ready to move on to greener pastures if the right offer comes along.

Alderweireld was in talks with Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer, but the Bundesliga outfit could not agree a fee with Ajax, while the defender found the personal terms on offer not to his liking.

Ajax did accept an offer from Norwich City, however Alderweireld snubbed a switch to Carrow Road.

Long-time suitors Liverpool are the side all eyes are now on with regards to a bid for the player and Alderweireld has dropped some encouragement for the Reds by insisting being out of the Champions League is no handicap to signing him.

"I am looking for a good club that play attacking football and that suits my game," he told NUsport.

"It would be nice if they are in the Champions League, but it is not a requirement. I don't want to play a lower standard of football in any case."

Ajax picked up their first silverware of the Dutch season yesterday, beating AZ Alkmaar 3-2 after extra-time in the Dutch Super Cup.

Daily Post: Reds to make their move

Brendan Rodgers is hoping to  further bolster his Liverpool squad with the  signing of Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo.

Rodgers is targeting the  22-year-old left-back on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move.

As a Paraguay international, Melgarejo would require a work permit for any transfer to be ratified by the authorities.

However, Rodgers is an admirer of the defender  - who has also been tracked by Arsenal and  Fenerbahce this summer - and believes  he can provide genuine competition to  Jose Enrique at left-back.

Melgarejo, who played against  Chelsea in the Europa League final last  season, began his career as a winger  before being converted to a defender  by Benfica coach Jorge Jesus.

Mail: Rodgers eyes left-back
Jul 29th 2013, 08:30

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool have targeted Benfica's Lorenzo Melgarejo in a bid to provide the cover at left-back they require.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said last week while Liverpool were in Australia that he wanted to bring in another option at left-back, as he only has Jose Enrique and England U21 international Jack Robinson for that position.

A deal for Valencia's Aly Cissokho had been discussed but Rodgers has now turned to Melgarejo, a Paraguay international, and would be prepared to give him first team opportunities if an agreement could be reached.

Liverpool want to do a loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

Melgarejo, who played for Benfica in their Europa League final defeat against Chelsea, would require a work permit in order to play in the Barclays Premier League and that process would not be cut and dried, as he only has one full international cap.

The 22-year-old has been linked with Arsenal and Fenerbahce this summer.

Strengthening at left-back is one of Liverpool's main priorities, as is bringing an attacking midfielder, having missed out on Henrikh Mykhitaran.

The necessity to sign a central defender, however, has eased. Rodgers, who had been looking at Kyriakos Papadopoulos of Schalke, has been impressed with Kolo Toure's start to life at Anfield and is prepared to look at other areas first.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are also weighing up other strikers with Valencia's Roberto Soldado hopeful of joining Tottenham this week.

Liverpool are believed to hold an interest in Portugese midfielder Paulo Machado, who currently plies his trade in Greece with Olympiacos.

According to Portugese daily Record, the Reds are looking closely at the 27-year-old as a possible summer reinforcement, having been impressed with his debut campaign at the Greek champions.

Machado featured in 28 Greek Super League games last season as Olympiacos coasted to the title, booking a spot in this season's Champions League in the process.

The FC Porto youth product also helped Olympiacos to collect the Greek Cup to complete a domestic double.

A central midfielder, Machado joined Olympiacos from French Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse last season, with the Greek outfit paying a fee of £2.7m to sign him to a four-year contract.

Right-footed and able to push to operate on either flank, Machado has won international recognition with Portugal.

He has won five caps for Portugal's senior team, having also appeared for the country at U20, U21 and U23 level.
