Liverpool's quest for new talent has taken them to Sweden this week, with stories emerging that the Reds have been watching exciting Djurgarden star Daniel Amartey.

Capable of playing as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-back, he has also been linked with Manchester City.

talkSPORT's Transfer Spotlight has the details...

What's the latest?

Originally a defensive midfielder, Amartey earned comparisons with Yaya Toure due to his displays in that role, but it was when he was converted to centre-back earlier this season that the youngster really started to excel.

Liverpool have been tracking his progress for a while now, and are believed to be keen to sign him then send him back out on loan for a period of time. Some reports claim that Manchester City could have first refusal on him due to an agreement with Djurgarden, however.

Did you know?

1. Described as 'the best thing Magnus Pehrsson left behind at Djurgarden', Amartey was brought to the Allsvenskan club for the first time as a 16-year-old after being scouted by the Swedish manager, but was too young to sign a contract. He eventually penned a deal in early 2013.

2. Amartey has spoken of his desire to play in the Premier League one day, and how he is driven to succeed in order to help his family back in Ghana, with his father unable to work after injuring his leg in an accident.

3. The youngster's former manager Pehrsson described him as having a "good understanding of the game, good passing game with few errors" and as "physically strong". Pehrsson added that he is "very similar to John Obi Mikel in his game, and has the ability to become as good".

4. Amartey has gained a reputation for his lung-bursting runs from centre-back into the opposition box. In a recent clash with IFK Goteborg, his 75-yard run in added time won Djurgarden a penalty that subsequently allowed them to win the game.

5. A Ghana U20 international, Amartey's agent Patrick Mork has talked up the possibility of him making the Ghana senior squad for the 2014 World Cup, should they qualify.

He says"I want to work hard enough to reach the level of Yaya Toure or John Obi Mikel. Even higher than that. I'm a footballer, and have to work hard constantly if I want to succeed in that."

"My hard work and dedication has really paid off, I'm happy to be on Liverpool's radar." Amartey speaking with Goal.com.
