Newcastle United may face another battle to hold onto one of their players after Liverpool targeted midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa as a possible summer recruit.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his wide options for next season, and has identified the French international as a suitable addition.

According to a report on Spanish transfer website fichajes.net, Ben Arfa could be the subject of a £20m bid from the Reds, and is open to the idea of moving to Anfield.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be loathe to lose another key member of his squad - after Demba Ba's £7.5m switch to Chelsea in January - especially given Ben Arfa has missed large parts of this season through injury.

But with the Magpies set to enquire again about bringing back Liverpool misfit Andy Carroll to St James' Park this summer, Ben Arfa could be used by Pardew as a possible makeweight.

PSG are also thought to be interested in the former Marseille talent, who recently admitted it would be 'a dream' to play for the Ligue 1 leaders.

Ben Arfa could choose to stay at Newcastle however, with the club who paid a total transfer fee of around £7m for his services rumoured to be preparing an offer of a new long-term contract.

The 25-year-old has made just 14 appearances this season, the last coming during the North East club's 2-1 defeat to Fulham in December.
