Liverpool are closing in on signing their second goalkeeper of the summer as a deal for Aston Villa's Shay Given nears completion.

The Irish stopper has been overtaken as the Villans' no.1 by Brad Guzan over the past year and is now set to act as back-up for Simon Mignolet, who moved to Anfield earlier this summer.

The former Newcastle goalkeeper still has three years remaining on his Aston Villa contact and remains one of the highest earners in Paul Lambert's young side, meaning Villans owner Randy Lerner would be keen to let Given depart.

He has also been linked with a host of loan moves this summer, with the likes of Doncaster Rovers - who have since signed Ross Turnbull - interested in his signature.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has landed highly-rated centre-back Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon for £8million.

The 20-year-old centre-back is travelling to England with his father Kola for a medical and to discuss personal terms.

But it is expected the deal will be announced this weekend.

The deal between the two clubs was concluded at 3am on Friday morning with the player rejecting an offer from Monaco and interest from Valencia.

Ilori, one of the most sought-after young players in Europe, is set to sign a four-year deal at Anfield where he is keen to play for Rodgers.

talkSPORT: Reds enquire about starlet

Liverpool and Crystal Palace have both enquired about signing Montenegrin starlet Deni Hocko, according to sources in Italy.

Both Premier League teams are keen on the 19-year-old, who has represented his national side at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

The midfielder, who is currently on the books at Buducnost Podgorica, has been likened to Italy ace Andrea Pirlo in his homeland.

Hocko only made the switch to Buducnost from Lovcen earlier this summer, but Liverpool and Palace want to bring him to the Premier League.

talkSPORT: Reds ready to launch bid

Liverpool have intensified their efforts to land Mamadou Sakho and are willing to fork out over £11m to sign him from Paris St-Germain in the next few days.

Brendan Rodgers is desperate to sign a new centre-back after seeing Kolo Toure suffer a groin injury during the 4-2 win against Notts County in midweek and Sakho is his preferred target.

French moneybags PSG have thus far rebuffed all offers from the Reds as they are desperate to hang on to a homegrown player who is regarded as a symbol of the club.

But with Thiago Silva and Marquinhos ahead of him in the queue for a first-team place, Sakho is keen to leave the French capital, especially in the build-up to next summer's World Cup.

Liverpool are aware Sakho is in the final year of his contract but they are still willing to pay a large fee to sign him this week.

Roma, who also want him, are unwilling to pay more than £4.2m, while AC Milan are only seeking a loan deal.

PSG are expected to make their decision later on Friday.

Liverpool face competition from AC Milan for the signing of Ukrainian star Andriy Yarmalenko after reportedly lodging a bid of almost £20m for the player.

According to Sky Italia Brendan Rodgers has offered €23m (£19.7m) for Dinamo Kiev's Yarmolenko who Ukrainian national coach Oleg Blohkin has called "unstoppable".

But Milan also have a long-standing interest in the player and after qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League, the Italian club could be ready to at least match Liverpool's offer after having a £17m bid turned down recently.

The 23-year-old's agent agent Mikhail Gulordava said: "Milan made a €20m (£17m) bid for Yarmolenko, but the only way to tempt Kiev's president is to make an offer that he can't refuse. However, Premier League clubs are also interested."

Meanwhile, Liverpool are close to signing PSG defender Mamadou Sakho despite Roma making a late move for Sakho. Sky Italia are reporting the player has agreed personal terms.

Liverpool are closing in on a surprise deal to make Shay Given their No.2 goalkeeper.

Rodgers is aiming to bring in experienced back-up for Simon Mignolet, whom he brought into replace Pepe Reina in June, and has identified Given as being an ideal.

Liverpool have resumed discussions with Sporting Lisbon over a £7million move for Tiago Ilori, who has been on Liverpool's wanted list all summer.

Express: Rodgers in defender negotiations

Liverpool will focus their efforts in the remaining days of the transfer window on landing a centre-back.

They are understood to be in negotiations with Sporting Lisbon over a £6million deal for highly rated Portuguese defender Tiago Llori.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of the 20-year-old and injuries to Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho during the week have forced him to step up the pursuit.

In addition to Llori, Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho is on Liverpool's radar, but his £12m price tag is a problem.

Liverpool are also considering offering veteran goalkeeper Shay Given, 37, a surprise lifeline to stay in the Premier League.

Clubcall: Reds weigh up move
Aug 30th 2013, 11:00

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are being linked with a shock move for former Republic of Ireland stopper Shay Given to provide back-up to Simon Mignolet.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to draft in an experienced alternative to the former Sunderland goalkeeper and has set his sights on Given who has been deemed surplus to requirements by Aston Villa.

Championship side Doncaster Rovers have been trying to push through a loan deal for the former Newcastle and Manchester City keeper, but that now looks unlikely to happen.

Villa have already told Given, who has three years remaining on his £60,000-a-week contract, that he is free to leave as they attempt to cut their wage bill with Brad Guzan having replaced the veteran as the club's number one.

Rodgers is eyeing a swoop for the 37-year-old after allowing Pepe Reina to join Napoli on a season-long loan earlier in the summer.
