Liverpool are being linked with a shock move for former Republic of Ireland stopper Shay Given to provide back-up to Simon Mignolet.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to draft in an experienced alternative to the former Sunderland goalkeeper and has set his sights on Given who has been deemed surplus to requirements by Aston Villa.
Championship side Doncaster Rovers have been trying to push through a loan deal for the former Newcastle and Manchester City keeper, but that now looks unlikely to happen.
Villa have already told Given, who has three years remaining on his £60,000-a-week contract, that he is free to leave as they attempt to cut their wage bill with Brad Guzan having replaced the veteran as the club's number one.
Rodgers is eyeing a swoop for the 37-year-old after allowing Pepe Reina to join Napoli on a season-long loan earlier in the summer.
