Clubcall: Argentinian linked to Reds

Liverpool are being linked with a January swoop for Paris Saint-Germain's Argentinian playmaker Javier Pastore.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has seemingly set his sights on the 24-year-old, who has become frustrated with life with the Ligue 1 champions since joining in 2011 from Italian outfit Palermo.

Pastore was the first big-name arrival at the Parc de Princes following the Qatari takeover, but he has since struggled for form as countless star names have been drafted into the squad since, under Carlo Ancelotti last season and then new coach Laurent Blanc.

Therefore it looks like Pastore will try and secure a move away with his agent, Marcelo Simonian, confirming that he would consider a winter exit.

He said: "In football there are always ups and downs. "He has been happy there, but now is not the time for nostalgia. We will see what happens in the next few months."

Rodgers would no doubt be interested in taking Pastore to Anfield and a £17million bid should be enough for Paris Saint-Germain to allow the player to depart.

Independent: No Fever Pitch for Beard's Ladies
Sep 28th 2013, 09:58

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

The last time a football team travelled to Liverpool needing victory to snatch the league title from their hosts' grasp, the ensuing drama ended up inspiring a couple of books and a film.

That was the night of May 26, 1989 when an injury-time goal from Michael Thomas claimed the old First Division title for Arsenal against a Liverpool side who had only needed to avoid defeat by two goals to complete the double.

That climax, celebrated in Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch, is unmatched in the long history of the men's game in this country yet the FA Women's Super League, in just its third season, has contrived to give us its own last-day showdown between the top two - with Liverpool involved again tomorrow when they take on a Bristol Academy side two points worse off and needing victory.

Matt Beard, the Liverpool Ladies manager, gave a one-word answer - "no" - when asked if that Thomas goal had come up in conversation this week.

He and his players are more interested in creating fresh history and they go into tomorrow's decider at their Halton Stadium home in Widnes, eyeing a first-ever trophy. Liverpool have been top since late May, having progressed more quickly than envisaged in the initial "three-year plan" Beard put in place on arriving from Chelsea in summer 2012.

"Our ambition this year was to finish in the top four," says Beard, who won the FA Cup with Charlton. They already have a Champions League place booked for the first time but "now we are where we are, we want to win it", he added.

For Beard it is "good for the game" that there will be a new name on the trophy with Arsenal, champions for the last nine seasons, out of the running after a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player and he predicts that the competition's strength in depth will grow further "with Manchester City coming into the Super League [at Doncaster Rovers Belles' expense] and Lincoln going to Notts County", even if those moves offend many people's sense of fairness.

Tomorrow's contest is very much David versus Goliath with Liverpool's playing budget roughly three times that of Academy, a club affiliated to South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.

Bottom in each of the past two campaigns, Liverpool received a big investment from Anfield's American owners during the past close season, which brought in 12 new players - six from abroad as well as Everton's England pair Fara Williams and Natasha Dowie. "The investment from the club has given us a buzz and it enables us to compete," says Beard.

"I felt we recruited not only talented players but the right characters as well. Chelsea have brought in similar numbers to us and struggled."

Liverpool's squad train together five evenings a week at the club's Kirkby Academy and Beard has been at Melwood to learn from Brendan Rodgers, who passed on his best wishes when the pair met there on Thursday. Beard also spent the evening hoping his eight players in international action would survive unscathed.

If Liverpool, comfortably the league's top scorers, prevailed 4-3 when the teams met in Bristol in August, the visitors, who will bring 300 travelling fans with them, believe anything is possible after setting up tomorrow's showdown by overturning a 3-0 deficit at Doncaster, Spanish forward Natalia netting the winner in the 89th minute to complete her hat-trick.

"If we get a performance and get the attitude right we have a great chance to shock everyone by winning the league," said coach Mark Sampson. His team lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal but the league, as Brian Moore said at Anfield all those years ago, is up for grabs now.

Liverpool Ladies v Bristol Academy is live on BT Sport 2, kick-off 2pm BST.

ESPN: Rodgers eyes Pastore swoop
Sep 28th 2013, 09:54

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool could make a January move for PSG midfielder Javier Pastore, according to a report in Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Arsenal and Chelsea were linked with Pastore in the summer but were unable to make a successful offer for the 24-year-old.

Now it seems Brendan Rodgers is eager to add to his growingly congested midfield and could look to set up a deal for when the transfer window reopens.

Although Pastore is believed to be a key part of Laurent Blanc's plans at the Parc des Princes, the Argentinean is keen to make his mark elsewhere.

There could be some confusion, though, with Pastore particularly adept at the No. 10 role, which is likely to become Philippe Coutinho's this season.

Football Italia: Muriel catching the eye
Sep 28th 2013, 09:51

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Udinese starlet Luis Muriel's agent insists he has had "no contact with English clubs" despite reports of Liverpool's interest.

The Colombian has scored 13 goals in 25 games for the Friulani, catching the eye of some top clubs, including Liverpool.

"Muriel is a player of talent and potential, so I think it is normal that big clubs should follow him carefully," agent Helmut Wennin told calcionews24.

"However, I have had no contact with any English clubs regarding the future of Luis. I haven't had official contact with Italian sides either, but I don't know if the Pozzo family has discussed the situation.

"Udinese and the Pozzo family represent a fundamental step in Muriel's career and were very important in his growth process as a player and a man.

"Now Luis is focused on the current season, as he wants to do well in order to earn his spot in the Colombia squad.

"He has an excellent rapport with Francesco Guidolin and respects all his decisions for the good of the team. He knows that he is an important player for the club and has faith in his own capabilities."

The agent was asked whether Muriel would consider moving on next summer if an impressive proposal were to arrive.

"Yes, his objective is to play for a top club, I'd say that is normal. He will work hard to improve and one day maybe test himself in one of the biggest clubs in the world."

Echo: Dowie sets sights on title
Sep 28th 2013, 10:29

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Natasha Dowie has already caught the attention of Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool's prolific striker is on the brink of marking her first season since crossing the Mersey divide with a league championship medal.

Arsenal's nine-year reign as champions is over, and Liverpool hold a two-point lead over their last remaining challengers heading into Sunday's final round of the season. In a twist of fate, their visitors Bristol Academy are the one team that can deny them the trophy.

England international Dowie has scored 19 goals in 20 appearances for the Reds this season, and backed up that form by netting as a substitute for her country against both Belarus and Turkey in the past week.

She caused a stir locally by quitting Everton last November with team-mate Fara Williams to join ambitious Liverpool, and her hat-trick in the derby earlier this month rubbed Blue noses in it.

But Dowie has no regrets, and with Rodgers, Liverpool owner John W Henry and the men's first team all keeping close tabs, the 25-year-old niece of former Northern Ireland striker Iain Dowie is thrilled to have silverware within touching distance.

After five years at Everton, a chat with Reds manager Matt Beard about the investment that would be going into the Liverpool Ladies set-up persuaded Dowie it was time to switch allegiance.

She said: "I'd been at Everton for five years and I just felt like I needed a fresh start and I needed to push myself a bit more.

"I spoke to Matt (Beard) about the plans at Liverpool, with trying to go as full-time as possible, and how much the men would be supporting us, so for me that was a real positive thing.

"We had a training session with them at the beginning of pre-season which was great. We joined in and got to meet the first team and had breakfast with them.

"I know they take a real interest. Brendan Rodgers texted the gaffer to say 'Tell Natasha congratulations on her call-up to England and her hat-trick', so they're paying attention."

Express: Race for Pastore hots up
Sep 28th 2013, 12:47

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Javier Pastore could the subject of a bid from Liverpool in the January transfer market, amid interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

Arsenal made a late enquiry for Pastore on deadline day, before landing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £42.5million.

Chelsea have also been linked with the 24-year-old, but Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers hopes to pip the London clubs with a bid in the New Year.

Pastore was dropped for PSG's 1-1 draw with title rivals Monaco last weekend, and is said to be considering his future in Paris.

And former Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle winger David Ginola - who also played for PSG - believes the Argentine international could push for a move in the New Year if he continued to be used sparingly in the French capital.

"Why not? Anyone talented can do well in the Premier League," Ginola told Express Sport when asked about the chances of Pastore moving to England.

"If he doesn't play until Christmas he will probably ask for a move in the winter transfer window. I'm pretty sure about that."

"For Javier Pastore, if he stays too long and spends too much time on the bench that would be a problem for him and I'm sure his advisors will consider a move."

Clubcall: Striker blow for Black Cats
Sep 27th 2013, 12:29

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Sunderland caretaker boss Kevin Ball is without star striker Steven Fletcher for the clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

The striker picked up a shoulder injury in the defeat to West Brom last week and will not feature against the Reds which means Jozy Altidore could lead the line, but Emanuele Giaccherini, who scored in midweek in the Capital One Cup win over Peterborough, is pushing for a start.

Lee Cattermole is almost certain to start as long as he has not suffered any reaction to his midweek run out but Fabio Borini is ineligible to play against his parent club after joining Sunderland on loan from Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

Defensive duo Wes Brown (calf) and Phil Bardsley (foot) remain sidelined and will not feature.
