Wayne Rooney is pushing to make his Manchester United comeback against Liverpool on Sunday.

Rooney has missed Premier League leaders United's last four games with a knee injury he picked up in training on Christmas Day.

Although a scan revealed no damage, Rooney felt a twinge at the back of his knee and has not figured for United since December 22.

But it is understood the England striker has now resumed light training and has a chance of being on the bench for the clash with arch-rivals Liverpool.

United manager Alex Ferguson had initially ruled Rooney out for a further two weeks, meaning he would miss Sunday's Old Trafford encounter.

But Rooney's progress has been such that the 27-year-old could make his long-awaited return this weekend, albeit as a substitute.

United are desperate to get Rooney back to match fitness as quickly as possible, as their season enters a potentially defining period.

After facing Liverpool, they travel to Tottenham on January 20 and host Everton on February 10, before meeting Real Madrid in the Champions League three days later.
