Liverpool are ready to pounce if Xabi Alonso decides against extending his current deal at Real Madrid.
Alonso was a lynchpin in a Reds side which included the likes of Javier Mascherano, Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt, and has gone on to dazzle in the centre of Real's midfield.
But the 31-year-old has yet to respond to the Spanish champions' desire to extend his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, according to reports in Spain.
With boss Jose Mourinho widely tipped to leave the club in summer, Alonso may decide against pledging his future to Real beyond his contract's expiration in 2014.
Real, who are also interested in capturing Tottenham winger Gareth Bale in summer, are eager to keep hold of Alonso.
Liverpool have made enquiries in recent months over the Spaniard's availability, according to TalkSport.
