Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has emerged as a serious contender to become the next manager of non-league side Macclesfield Town.

The 38-year-old Liverpudlian, who has long been keen on a first job in management now that his playing career appears to have come to an end, has been interviewed by the Silkmen.

But there are five other candidates on the Macclesfield shortlist.

Chief executive Jon Harris is not expecting a decision before Tuesday.

The Cheshire club have been without a manager since sacking Steve King on 4 April, after a run of just two points from four games, which ended their Blue Square Bet Premier play-off hopes.

Under youth team manager John Askey, who took temporary charge at the Moss Rose, they then lost their next four, but did finish the season on a comparative high.

After going five goals down inside 33 minutes on the penultimate weekend of the season at Woking, they scored four times in the final half to lose 5-4, before finishing the season with a 2-1 home win over Cambridge United to end up 11th.

Toxteth-born Fowler scored 129 Premier League goals in 267 appearances in his two spells with Liverpool, his career also including spells at Leeds, Manchester City, Cardiff and Blackburn, before finishing abroad in Australia, for North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory, and Thailand.

He has had coaching experience under his old Liverpool team-mate Paul Ince, at MK Dons, as well as with Bury two seasons ago and in Thailand with Muangthong United.

Fowler is also reportedly a multi-millionaire, as a result of his property investment deals.
