Liverpool have nosed ahead of Arsenal in the battle to sign Atletico Madrid frontman Diego Costa after submitting a formal offer, according to reports in Spain.
Brendan Rodgers is on the hunt for attacking players and he is believed to have made a bid for Costa.
The Brazilian enjoyed an excellent campaign at the Vicente Calderon last term and had been expected to take over the main attacking mantle from Radamel Falcao, who joined Monaco earlier this summer.
But Atletico, who have brought in David Villa and Leo Baptistao, could now cash in on him after Liverpool firmed up their interest.
The 24-year-old's buyout clause is set at £21.8m, although it is not yet clear if Liverpool will meet that valuation or negotiate a lower price.
Arsenal are also monitoring the two-time Brazil international's situation.
