Liverpool and Manchester United have been given a boost in their pursuit of Colombian striker Jackson Martinez after he rejected a big money move to Russia.

According to talkSPORT, the Porto striker turned down the chance to make a move to big-spending Anzhi Makhachkala as he did not think it was a step up in quality.

The report claims both Manchester United and Liverpool retain an interest in Martinez after he had a terrific first season at the Portuguese club.

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers will be looking to add quality to his squad as he tries to get the Liverpool back in to the Premier League top four for the first time in four years.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's interest may be affected by the news that Sir Alex Ferguson will retire as manager at the end of the season.

However, Martinez's record of 25 goals in 28 league games this season unlikely to put off any Ferguson successor.
