Brendan Rodgers will take his summer spending to almost £25million in the next 48 hours as Liverpool finalise deals for Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet.

Spanish striker Aspas completed his £7.6m switch from Celta Vigo today, while Sunderland goalkeeper Mignolet is due on Merseyside tomorrow for a medical and to put the final touches on his £9m transfer.

Having completed the signing of Sevilla attacker Luis Alberto for £6.8m over the weekend and already secured Kolo Toure on a free transfer from Manchester City, Rodgers is pressing ahead with adding depth to his squad.

The sale of Andy Carroll to West Ham for an initial £15.5m offsets much of the outlay, but Rodgers is still intent on making the required improvements to challenge for the top four next season.

Aspas, 25, who scored 12 goals last season in helping Celta remain in La Liga, will add to the fluidity and flexibility to the front line.

But Liverpool's need for central defensive reinforcements is a priority although interest in Schalke's Kyriakos Papadopoulos has been shelved.

Shakhtar Donetsk's Henrikh Mkhitaryan remains a target, although the Ukrainian club do not want to sell after banking £34m from the sale of Fernandinho to Manchester City.
