Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to sign Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso when his current contract expires next summer.
Liverpool favourite Alonso has been linked with a return to Merseyside as well as Italian giants Juventus as the clock ticks down on his deal at the Bernabeu.
But now Mourinho is plotting a shock swoop for the Spanish international, who is available to talk to other clubs in January.
Alonso is sidelined with a metatarsal fracture at the moment, having yet to make an appearance for Carlo Ancelotti's side this season.
And Mourinho is hoping to take advantage of Real's hesitancy to tie down the 31-year-old by raiding his former club to secure his services.
Last season Alonso proved himself as a key player for club and country by playing 46 games in all competitions.
