Liverpool have turned their attention to Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after Asmir Begovic ruled out a switch to Anfield.

The Belgian has already told Sunderland he wants to go, and it is thought that Liverpool are now mulling over an £8million bid for his services.

The switch in target comes after Stoke stopper Begovic ruled out a move, despite suggesting earlier this month that he was all but certain to arrive on Merseyside.

'I am happy at Stoke and I'll be happy to stay here,' said Begovic.

'I'm looking forward to the new season with the new manager, and the most important thing is that I'm at a club where I feel settled and comfortable.'

The decision to stay will have frustrated Rodgers, but it's now all hands to the pump to bring in Mignolet within the next fortnight.

Sunderland want £10million for the 25-year-old, who is also a target for Arsenal, but are desperate for the cash and are willing to negotiate.

Reports in the north east say a compromise could be met by the weekend.
