Liverpool have been put on alert after Tottenham defender Steven Caulker emerged as an £8million target for Cardiff City. Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of the 21-year-old centre-half after taking him on loan from Spurs when he was in charge at Swansea. Cardiff manager Malky Mackay wants the England international to strengthen his defence as he seeks to make three more signings before the Bluebirds' Premier League campaign kicks off against West Ham on Saturday, August 17. Tottenham value Caulker at £12m and may be reluctant to sell as they are short of cover at the centre of their defence. Jan Vertonghen suffered ankle ligament damage in the Barclays Asia Trophy match with Sunderland in Hong Kong and may miss the start of the new season. Younes Kaboul has yet to regain full fitness after missing nearly all last season with a knee injury and William Gallas is no longer at the club. Spurs, though, have been linked with a move with a £6m move for 23-year-old Steaua Bucharest central defender Vlad Chiriches and Sporting Lisbon's Tiago Ilori, also a target for Liverpool.
