Liverpool have made a loan move for Benfica's highly prized left-back Lorenzo Melgarejo.

Brendan Rodgers has been searching for more competition on the left side of defence to challenge the inconsistent Jose Enrique and the versatile Melgarejo, who has also often been used as a winger, has caught his attention.

Liverpool want to secure an initial loan move with a view to a more permanent deal.

A stumbling block could be securing a work permit as Melgarejo is Paraguayan, but Rodgers would argue the 22-year-old has international pedigree and he would be given plenty of opportunities to shine in the Premier League.

Melgarejo was one of the stars of Benfica's run to the Europa League final last year, when they were eventually defeated by Chelsea.

Liverpool still have plenty of work to do for the rest of the transfer window, with Rodgers eager for new additions in defence and attacking midfield.
