Liverpool have made a £12million bid for Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos as Brendan Rodgers looks to continue his summer spending.

Rodgers has already splashed out the best part of £23million during the transfer window so far on deals for Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Simon Mignolet, while Kolo Toure has joined on a free transfer.

But the Reds are not stopping there and have thrown in a £12million bid for Schalke's Greek international Papadopoulos, who is a long-term target.
According to reports in Germany, Schalke are reviewing the bid but will likely ask Liverpool to increase their offer with the 21-year-old boasting an £19million release clause.

Liverpool have identified Papadopoulos as the man they want as a long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher, following his retirement.

Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid have previously expressed an interest in the defender, who can play anywhere across the back four or in midfield, but he is understood to prefer a transfer to the Premier League.

Papadopoulos is contracted to Schalke until 2016.
