Philippe Coutinho is hoping his performances for Liverpool FC will help him realise his 'dream' of playing in next year's World Cup finals in his homeland.

The attacking midfielder hasn't featured for Brazil since he was handed his full international debut in a friendly against Iran back in 2010.

But Coutinho, who has made a big impact at Anfield following his January arrival from Inter Milan, is on a mission to force his way into coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's plans.

"It was an honour for me when I was called up the first time," he said.

"At the moment my aim is to play well for Liverpool and to learn and develop as much as I can.

"But I am sure if I play consistently well for Liverpool then the Brazil coach will notice me and I'll be called up for the national team.

"Every player has a dream to play for their national team and especially in a World Cup.

"The fact the next World Cup is in Brazil makes that extra special.

"I will try to play as well as I can in order to make the squad.

"It's my dream to play for Brazil in the World Cup."

Coutinho is inspired by the achievements of the legends who have graced the five-times World Cup winners in the past.

"There have been so many great names from my country's past," he said.

"Players like Pele, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Romario.

"They are heroes of mine and they are players I am trying to follow in their footsteps.

"That is my aim but I'm still young and I need to learn a lot."

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino, who managed Coutinho during his loan spell at Espanyol last season, recently compared his qualities to Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi.

The 20-year-old was flattered by the compliment but insists he still has so much to prove.

"It's always nice to hear such words from a manager you have worked with," he added.

"But I cannot be complained with players like this. I'm honest enough to know I need to learn so much more.

"I will try to develop and do my best for Liverpool in order to improve as much as I can. Hopefully one day I will be recognised as a great player like them."
