Liverpool have been given another fillip in their bid to land former Kop favourite Xabi Alonso.

The Spaniard has reportedly rejected a contract extension at the Bernebeu, where there are expected to be wholesale changes in the summer.

The Express Online reported yesterday that Los Blancos are lining up PSG's Marco Verratti as a potential replacement for Alonso.

And now the La Liga powerhouses have another player in mind to add to the shortlist of players that could succeed Alonso.

Spanish football site Inside Spanish Football claims Real are looking at Asier Illarramendi as a replacement for the defensive midfielder.

They note that Real tried to sign Illarramendi last summer, but baulked at the steep asking price for the Real Sociedad midfielder.

Real are exploring other alternatives including Ruben Pardo and Sevilla's French midfielder, Geoffrey Kondogbia.

Alonso is yet to open his account for Real this season.
