Liverpool could be set for a summer move for Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho after the defender admitted his desire to seek first team football.

The 23-year-old has fallen out of favour in the French capital since Carlo Ancelotti took the reins last season, with former AC Milan player Thiago Silva and Alex, who previously plied his trade under Ancelotti at Chelsea, the first-choice pairing.

And Sakho has now admitted his desire to quit PSG, saying he needs first team football to be in contention for a place in the French squad for next summer's World Cup, with Liverpool a potential destination.

"In the mind of the PSG coach, I'm third [in the pecking order of central defenders]. I finally accept it, even if I do not understand it, especially since I've not had an explanation - that disappointed me too," he told L'Equipe.

"I have to play football at club level to qualify for the France team. Next season will be particularly important. I've had a difficult time at PSG for a year and a half. I must play to continue my progress."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is set for a summer re-build of his squad, with the defence one of his main priorities after Reds stalwart Jamie Carragher announced he will be retiring at the end of the season.
