The setting was far from glamorous, but for Liverpool supporters the sight of England U21s sweeping aside Romania at Wycombe on Thursday night would have provided plenty of comfort.

Five members of Brendan Rodgers's Reds' squad were on show for Stuart Pearce's side. All impressed.

Left-back Jack Robinson, currently earning his stripes on loan at Wolves, grabbed England's second goal, his first at U21 level, whilst Jonjo Shelvey, strutting across the park in the No. 10 role, provided two assists.

Andre Wisdom was solid, if untroubled, at centre-back, whilst skipper Jordan Henderson ran the show in the centre of midfield.

Perhaps most reassuring, though, was the form of Raheem Sterling, who dazzled for just over an hour, setting up Wilfried Zaha's opener before making way for Marvin Sordell.

It has been a gruelling season for the 18-year-old. A total of 35 first-team appearances, a new contract, and a senior England cap.

Little wonder, then, that Rodgers, desperate to avoid burnout, has been eager to take the teenager out of the firing line in recent weeks.

And judging by his showing for the U21s, it seems to have done the trick.
