Arsene Wenger faces a summer scrap with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea for Swansea central defender Ashley Williams.

The Arsenal manager has identified Williams as a top target in the transfer market as he seeks to strengthen a defence which leaked too many goals this season.

Wenger is ready to part company with Per Mertesacker, who could return to Germany by joining Wolfsburg, while Thomas Vermaelen may be used as bait in a bid to sign Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic.

Malaga midfielder Isco is another summer target as Wenger bids to transform a team which has not won a trophy in eight years.

Williams is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League but the Wales star is also coveted by his former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and by Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who will allow Joleon Lescott to leave in the summer.

Chelsea are also considering a move as skipper John Terry is becoming increasingly long in the tooth but their plans are on hold until their managerial merry-go-round has another spin at the end of the season.

Swans boss Michael Laudrup will be reluctant to allow his captain to leave but if the money is right and it helps fund transfer moves for the Capital One Cup winners then business will be done.
