Liverpool could be encouraged to launch a summer move for Mamadou Sakho after the Paris St-Germain defender admitted he needs first-team football to cement his place in the France team before next year's World Cup.

The 23-year-old, who has spent his entire career in Paris, missed just five league matches over the course of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons and established himself as one of the classiest young defenders in Europe.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order since former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti took over at the Parc des Princes midway through last season.

Ancelotti subsequently splashed out on Brazil star Thiago Silva and has opted to pair the ex-Milan centre-back with his former Chelsea charge Alex.

Sakho has suffered as a result - he's started 18 of PSG's 29 Ligue 1 matches and just two of their eight Champions League fixtures - and says he's disappointed by the diminution of his first-team role.

He told L'Equipe: "In the mind of the PSG coach, I'm third [in the pecking order of central defenders]. I finally accept it, even if I do not understand it, especially since I've not had an explanation - that disappointed me too.

"I have to play football at club level to qualify for the France team. Next season will be particularly important. I've had a difficult time at PSG for a year and a half. I must play to continue my progress."
