The author of a highly- acclaimed new novel on the career of Reds legend Bill Shankly said he felt the great manager had saved his career.
Award-winning novelist David Peace said he had begun to think he would never write another book before tackling Red or Dead, which was released to critical plaudits last week.
The author of The Damned United and the Red Riding quartet of novels said he had been struggling for ideas and inspiration before taking on the novel, which charts Shankly's Anfield career and subsequent retirement.
Visiting Liverpool ahead of the launch event at the Epstein theatre on Wednesday next week, he told the ECHO: "It was difficult and I was finding it very hard to write.
"But being consumed by Shankly and his life saved my own as a writer."
