Liverpool have agreed a deal in  principle for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas and are now ready to make it a double Spanish swoop by landing Sevilla's Luis Alberto.

Aspas will join for a £7.7million fee after the Reds finalised their arrangements with the Galician club.

Only the paperwork needs to be completed but the 25-year-old's representatives and Anfield chiefs do not expect any problems on that score.

With Brendan Rodgers on the verge of securing his second signing of the summer after netting Manchester City's Ivorian defender Kolo Toure on as Bosman free transfer, the Reds boss will immediately turn his attentions to   Alberto.

Liverpool have moved to the front of the race to sign the 20-year-old after Barcelona failed to take up their option on the Sevilla player.

The Catalan giants, who had Alberto playing on loan for their B team in Spain's Segunda Division last season, had until yesterday to sign him for a pre-agreed fee but as expected they did not seal a permanent switch. That has paved the way for Rodgers, who is a long-time admirer of the player, to make a £6million move.

Alberto, who has been on Liverpool's radar since Rafael Benitez's reign, played mostly as a winger while at parent club Sevilla but was employed up front in a more central role in Catalonia last term.

He netted 11 goals last season and provided 17 assists, but the Spanish under-21 international remains coy about a potential switch about Anfield but Rodgers now believes he is in a strong position to complete a deal.

When asked about a move to Liverpool, Alberto said: "Nothing is decided. All I know now is that I'm player of Sevilla.

"I cannot say anything more as I don't know and that is the truth. At the moment I am calm and thinking about my holidays."
