Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants to steal a march on his rivals by making a fresh bid for Derby wonderkid Will Hughes in January.
Hughes was the subject of intense interest from Liverpool during the summer transfer window, but Derby managed to hold onto the England U21 midfielder.
However, Rodgers is poised to return with another offer for Hughes in the New Year, after reportedly instructing chief scout Barry Hunter to keep tabs on the 18-year-old.
Derby boss Nigel Clough claims it will take a bid of at least £6m to force a sale, saying last month: "Would it be more than £6million? Yes, I think it is fair to say that."We just think it is going to be a very, very substantial figure to tempt him away."
Liverpool may have to pay as much as £10m to land Hughes in January, with a host of top Premier League sides interested in the Surrey-born youngster.
Newcastle considered a making a formal offer to Derby this summer, while Arsenal and Manchester City are also interested in the player.
