Liverpool are seeking to bolster their defensive options by launching a move for left-back Lorenzo Melgarejo.
Brendan Rodgers is closing in on a year-long loan agreement for Benfica's Paraguayan international, with a view to making it permanent.
Melgarejo, 22, will require a work permit, but is expected to put pressure on first-choice Jose Enrique for a starting role at Anfield.
Liverpool are due to arrive back on Merseyside today following the successful conclusion of their Far East tour, which ended with a 3-0 win over Thailand yesterday, and negotiations with Benfica will continue.
It is likely they will pay a loan fee for Melgarejo, who played in the Europa League final for the Portuguese side against Chelsea last season.
He started his career as a winger and had been monitored by Arsenal and Fenerbahce.
