Echo: Brendan pleased with Suarez return

Brendan Rodgers believes Luis Suarez has already been welcomed back into the Liverpool FC fans' fold after his summer spent trying to exit Anfield.

And he believes that Suarez recognises and appreciates the backing he was given on his return to first team action at Old Trafford last night.

Suarez made his first start since April 21 in the Capital One Cup defeat by Manchester United.

During his absence he has given several interviews in South America declaring his desire to leave Liverpool.

But last night he had his name sung both before and throughout the match.

And Rodgers said: "The support they have given him is unheralded really. It's such a unique club where they support the players that wear the shirt and they were brilliant towards him. He's given them everything.

"He clapped the crowd before the match started, which was brilliant, so he recognises everything they have given him.

"He knows he just has to get his head down now and give them that great talent which he has and hope that it will end up in goals for him."

Suarez was a constant threat throughout and Rodgers added: "I thought he was excellent.

"Considering he's been out for such a long time he ran himself into the ground and you could see he was always a threat.

"He had defenders on the back foot with a couple of his twists and turns, looked like he was going to get in a few times - and obviously as he goes on he's going to get sharper.

"Overall he can be really pleased and I was really happy for him. His contribution was brilliant."

Rodgers selected a three-man central defensive trio of Toure, Skrtel and Sakho, with Jordan Henderson supplying the width on the right and Victor Moses tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez up front.

Rodgers added: "The system was probably something that has been forced upon us really by the players that we have available.

"The game at the weekend, I have never in my life played four centre-halves. Anyone who knows me and knows my work knows it is not how I would operate.

"But when you've no choice that's what you've got to do. I always try and get as many attackers on the field as I can and I just felt it was a system that suited the players and I thought the players played the system really well.

"We got numbers forward and if we have to play that system for a period of time until players are fit - we obviously have to work on it more - but the players are comfortable in it.

"It gives us three players to dominate midfield and two strikers up front who are top strikers in the league and still keeps us secure at the back.

"I thought we had some good spells where we got into really good areas, but probably just the final pass let us down.

"I could have no qualms about the players' effort. I thought they were brilliant in terms of everything they put into the game but obviously we're disappointed at a lack of concentration for the goal.

"I think the players have made an excellent start. We were flat and subdued at the weekend and we couldn't get going. Part of that was because of the players we had available.

"Tonight they have given everything. Now we can only concentrate on the league up until Christmas so we have to make sure we stay up in that top six."
