Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledged that the new Hillsborough inquest will bring fresh pain for the victims' families and that it will take a long time before trust is fully restored.

The Conservative leader welcomed the setting of the March 31 deadline for the inquest to start and said it was time to "get on with it" in order to bring a measure of closure for families and the city.

Speaking as he prepares for next week's party conference in Manchester, he said: "I hope people can see that this Government continues to want to deliver for the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy."

He continued: "I hope that people in Liverpool can see that the Government which I lead is trying to deal with this issue and get some sort of closure for the victims' families and for people in Liverpool as a whole.

Striking down the last inquest, holding a new inquest, listening to the results of James Jones's excellent report..

"These are all I think steps along the way to dealing with this issue properly because that isn't what happened in the past.

"I think that trust isn't built in a day or from one step but it's a long process and it's a very painful process for victims.

"Another inquest is a very painful process, a very difficult process, but it's right and we must get on with it."
