Arsenal look set to rival Liverpool for Schalke's Greek defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos in January.

Papadopoulos was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the most recent transfer window, with some reports suggesting that a deal had already been agreed subject to a medical as the 21-year-old recovered from a serious knee injury.

But a move failed to materialise with Liverpool opting instead to bring in Mamadou Sakho from PSG and Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon as the transfer window drew to a close.

And now Arsenal are set to try and beat Liverpool to the defender in January according to reports in Italy.

Reports at the start of the month suggested that Schalke were prepared to let Papadopoulos leave this summer if they received an acceptable offer for the Greek international.

And it seems that the news alerted a host of clubs, including Manchester City, Chelsea, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Zenit St Petersburg to the possibility of signing the player in January.

But Arsenal appear to be the new frontrunners, ahead even of Liverpool, with reports suggesting that the Gunners may be willing to meet Schalke's £11m asking price.
