Echo: Swans still special for Rodgers

Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers returns to Swansea City tonight insisting he will always be indebted to his former club.

Rodgers masterminded the Swans' promotion to the Premier League in 2010/11 before leading them to an impressive 11th-placed finish in the top flight.

The style in which that was achieved earned the Northern Irishman the Anfield job 15 months ago and in his absence the Welsh outfit have continued to make progress. Michael Laudrup led them to League Cup glory and ninth spot last term.

"Swansea is a special club who gave me the chance to work and to flourish," Rodgers said.

"It was a brilliant two years for me. We both arrived in the big time together.

"The promotion season was incredible. The Championship is a really tough league with some big clubs in it. To play as well as we did and get to the promised land was a great achievement.

"Our highest transfer in that season was £500,000 for Scott Sinclair. We went into the Premier League and our net spend was £7million with our biggest outlay £3.5million on Danny Graham.

"The odds were stacked against us but we were determined to defend our principles. We had a really good season and club has been able to build on that.

"Seeing them spend £12million on Wilfried Bony this summer tells you that the club is moving forward.

"It's a great city and great people and I'll never forget my time there. It's always a joy to go back."

The Swans lost their opening two league games to Manchester United and Tottenham before securing a 2-0 win at West Brom before the international break.

Laudrup's side face a hectic week with a Europa League trip to Valencia on Thursday and then an away league clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"It's a tough schedule for them and I know from last season how difficult it is to balance that," Rodgers added.

"If you want to do well in the Europa League then it's very hard to play the same team in the league a few days before, but that's why they have built a squad. I know that you never get an easy game at Swansea."
