Metro: Reds given Alonso green light

Liverpool want to land Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid in January after Brendan Rodgers was given the green light to re-sign the midfielder.

Alonso swapped Anfield for Madrid in 2009 and has been a huge success, but the 31-year-old is now into the final year of his contract, and an extension is looking unlikely.

Chelsea and Juventus are also eyeing up the pass-master, but Rodgers is desperate to bring him back to Liverpool in the new year.

Liverpool are well stocked in central midfield with Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Joe Allen and Lucas among the options, but Alonso would offer something different.

It's thought Madrid would be willing to accept around £3million in January to do business, instead of potentially losing him for nothing at the end of the current campaign.
