Liverpool are closing in a January move for Palermo striker Abel Hernandez.

Hernandez was linked with a deadline day move to Arsenal, with the player known to be unhappy with life in Italy and keen to push his case for inclusion in Uruguay's national team ahead of next summer's World Cup.

And while a move to Arsenal failed to materialise it seems that Liverpool have now entered the race for Hernandez, who would team up with compatriot Luis Suarez at Anfield.

Just before the close of the transfer window Hernandez said:  "The club and the coach told me that I could leave if the right offer was made and I think that has now arrived.

"They know what I want and they know what they promised me. I don't want to lose the chance of playing at the World Cup next summer."I think playing in Serie A is beautiful, but the desire to be at World Cup 2014 is what has pushed me to ask for a transfer."

Hernandez has scored 21 times in 86 games for Palermo, who currently find themselves in Italy's Serie B, fueling Hernandez's concerns that he needs a more high profile stage to catch the attention of Uruguay's national coach Oscar Tabarez.
