Former Prime Minister, Sir John Major apologised to the Hillsborough families for his  failure to do more to support the campaign for justice when he was PM.

Speaking at a Parliamentary Press Gallery lunch yesterday, Sir John, who was Prime Minister between 1990 and 1997, said: "We must all say sorry. We should have done more. It's one of many things you look back on and regret."

His comments were welcomed by Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, who said they marked a change in attitudes.

She said: "It is a good thing and marks  a complete turnaround from being accused and called the names we were, to receiving a Pride of Britain Award and now getting apologies from Prime Ministers.

"The Major years were terrible years for the campaign, but to be honest all governments let us down and at least now they are listening and apologising.
