A leading Hillsborough lawyer has won a top legal award.

Elkan Abrahamson who works for city law firm Broudie Jackson Canter - who acts for 19 of the Hillsborough families - won the Law Society Gazette Legal Personality of the Year award at the Law Society Excellence Awards on Tuesday night.

He was also highly commended in the category Solicitor of the Year for Private Practice.

Mr Abrahamson has worked closely with Hillsborough campaigners for nearly two decades to shed light on the truth about Hillsborough.

Mr Abrahamson, from Aigburth, also provided free legal advice over many years for Hillsborough mum Anne Williams and was alongside her at the High Court in London in December to see the original inquest verdicts of accidental death overturned.

The awards recognised the most outstanding practitioners in their field and were open to individuals and teams across the entire legal sector.

Nick Fluck, Law Society president, said: "Elkan Abrahamson should be justly proud of the great work he has done which has led to this award. The Law Society is committed to recognising and celebrating excellence in the legal profession and we congratulate the Liverpool lawyer on this huge achievement."

The Gazette's editor in chief, Paul Rogerson, said: "Through his longstanding dedication to the cause of the Hillsborough families in their fight for justice, Elkan Abrahamson has brought great credit to his profession. The Gazette is delighted that he is our Legal Personality of the Year 2013."
