Express: Taylor praises Gerrard influence

Roy Hodgson's decision to make Steven Gerrard his full-time captain has been hailed as one of the most vital he made on the route to Rio.

One of Hodgson's predecessors as England manager - albeit for only one match - was Peter Taylor, who left his mark by installing 25-year-old David Beckham as captain, a role he undertook for another 58 games.

Beckham's stature as a player and his influence on the team grew from that decision in 2000 and Taylor believes Gerrard is flourishing with the responsibility.

Taylor, who this week returned to football management at the age of 60 with League One Gillingham, said: "Gerrard will be getting better and better as a captain, as David did.

"Beckham knew the role, knew what was expected. He spoke to players quietly before matches, spoke to Sven-Goran Eriksson. I am sure Gerrard is doing the same with Roy.

"The greatest thing about the situation is that David played with more responsibility and performed better with the captaincy. That is how Gerrard looks now.

"On Friday against Montenegro he had to be slightly more defensive for the sake of the team. He has been outstanding."
