Steven Gerrard claims he will be the proudest man in the country if he can lead England to the World Cup finals at Wembley on Tuesday night.

The England captain has urged his players to seize the day against Poland and secure the victory that will guarantee  qualification for next summer's tournament.

Roy Hodgson's side are top of Group H and will be in the World Cup draw, scheduled for December 6 in Bahia, Brazil, if they win.

Gerrard, who will earn his 107th cap, said: "I'd be the proudest man in the country if we get the win we're after. Everyone knows the size of the game and everyone is itching to play. It will be a big personal achievement for me to say I was the captain through a campaign and led the lads to Brazil. I'd be delighted.

"They're aware of how big this is and what's at stake. We need to seize the day."

England are in confident mood after Friday's 4-1 victory over Montenegro at Wembley kept them in control of Group H.

They are a point clear of second-placed Ukraine and are guaranteed a place in the World Cup play-offs even if they blow their big chance against Poland.

Gerrard added: "For 90 minutes we have to be aggressive and take the game to the opposition.

"We have to be patient as I think Poland will have similar tactics to Montenegro and make it hard for us.

"There's huge expectation among the fans. There is  pressure, but you've really got to be excited by games like this.

"I'm looking forward to it and I'm sure everyone else is. At times the team have played with too much fear and pressure, but Roy has created an atmosphere that is very relaxed but very professional.

"He has shown trust in the players."

Hodgson has been forced into at least one change against Poland because Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker has been ruled out of the game through suspension.
