Liverpool have received a boost in their pursuit of Toby Alderweireld after his agent confirmed Bayer Leverkusen have pulled out of the race to land the Ajax defender.
Despite signing Kolo Toure earlier this week, Brendan Rodgers is still on the lookout for another centre-back.
Alderweireld, who has featured in all three of Ajax's consecutive title-winning campaigns, is a long-term target.
The Belgian came through the Amsterdam club's esteemed academy and is a regular for his national side.
Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen had made the most concrete offer for the defender in recent weeks but they have now dropped their interest having failed to meet his financial demands.
And the 24-year-old's agent Soren Lerby has revealed that Leverkusen are now looking at other options.
"They (Bayer) are going to focus on another player," he is quoted as saying in AD.
