PSG defender Mamadou Sakho has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and, after falling down the pecking order at the Paris giants since the arrival of Thiago Silva, as the young Frenchman himself predicted at this time last year, he is looking for a new club to avoid stagnating.
Sakho has now publicly revealed Liverpool's interest in signing him, so with that in mind, talkSPORT's Transfer Spotlight has more on the France international...
Name: Mamadou Sakho
Date of birth: 13 February 1990
Birthplace: Paris, France
Position: Central defender
Club: PSG
International appearances: 13 (France)
Honours: Ligue 1 (2012/13), Coupe de la Ligue (2007/08), Coupe de France (2009/10), Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year (2010/11)
Once considered one of the most important players at the French capital's premier club, Carlo Ancelotti's arrival at PSG coincided with a down-turn in fortunes for Mamadou Sakho, leading to him playing a bit-part role last season behind Thiago Silva and Alex, and conceding the club's captaincy.
With his contract due to expire in 2014, the defender is looking for a way out, and has publicly mentioned Liverpool's interest in signing him
Did you know?
1) Sakho has spent his entire career in Paris, starting out at Paris FC as an eight-year-old, before being snapped up by PSG when he was 12.
2) After experiencing some difficulty adapting to PSG as a youngster, the defender was eventually made captain and began developing rapidly. He was first called up to the senior PSG squad at the age of 16, but didn't manage to make an appearance until his 17th birthday under Paul Le Guen, when he started a UEFA Cup match against AEK Athens.
3) Le Guen rated the young defender highly and, controversially, decided to make him captain for his first starting appearance in Ligue 1 against Valenciennes. At 17 years old he became the youngest captain in the history of both PSG and Ligue 1. He would later go on to displace the legendary Claude Makelele as permanent captain of the club, and leadership is known as one of his strongest qualities.
4) Sakho has gained the nickname 'Kirikou' from PSG's fans, due to the defender sporting a hairstyle similar to that worn by the eponymous hero of the cartoon 'Kirikou and the Sorceress'. Do you see a resemblance?
