Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has backed Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney to develop a top-class partnership for Roy Hodgson's England.

Sturridge is the Premier League's leading marksman this season, topping the goalscoring charts with five strikes for Liverpool.

The former Chelsea man has seven in all competitions for the Reds this term and has scored 19 goals in total since moving to the club for £12m in January.

Rooney has also found his scoring touch and has five for the season, including goal number 200 for Manchester United in the 4-2 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen last month.

Gerrard feels that the pair can dovetail to devastating affect if they are allowed to build a partnership for Roy Hodgson's side.

"For me, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge is the partnership that every England fan wants to see," said Gerrard.

"You have seen what he offers and if we can get Daniel and Wayne on the pitch, so much the better.

"[Sturridge] is in top form and has made a brilliant start to the season."

The pair are likely to be included in Hodgson's squad for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland, which will be played at Wembley on October 11 and 15 respectively.

Victory in both games will see the Three Lions qualify for next summer's World Cup in Brazil.
