Express: Honda to decide soon

TOTTENHAM look set to pull off a transfer coup by beating a host of clubs to the free transfer signing of Japanese attacker Keisuke Honda in January.

Honda is available on a free transfer in January as his contract with current club CSKA will expire on 31 December.

Reports in Russia suggest that Spurs have leapt to the head of the queue to sign Honda, despite the interest of Liverpool, Juventus, Monaco and AC Milan.

Milan came very close to signing Honda in the summer, only for a £5m deal to fall through at the last minute, and although the 27-year-old is on record as saying he wants to join the Italian giants, it seems that Spurs are now in pole position.

Honda spoke earlier this week about his options ahead of January, saying: "I have a number of options - when the time comes I will make a decision.

"I have now decided I will leave my club at the expiry of the contract, everything else will be decided soon."

Honda is believed to be earning £70,000-a-week in Moscow, but it is thought that Spurs have offered him a substantial pay-rise after being buoyed by the lack of a transfer fee.

Honda typically plays as an attacking midfielder, either out wide or through the middle, but can also play up front.

Andre Villas-Boas reportedly intends to play him in a more advanced role at Spurs as he looks to strengthen his attacking options, given the depth of talent he already has at his disposal in midfield.
