Liverpool are ready to ignite a transfer war with Roma, as they have reportedly revived their interest in signing Lazio defender Modibo Diakite.
Diakite will be a free agent in the summer, and the 26-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Anfield in January, after his agent claimed that he would prefer a move to Merseyside.
After his agent backtracked on his comments, it was reported that Diakite was very close to signing for Napoli, but according to talkSPORT, his transfer to Naples has now fallen through, leaving Liverpool and Italian giants Roma to battle it out for his services.
Liverpool are certainly in the market for at least two centre-backs as Jamie Carragher will be retiring at the end of the season and the signing of Diakite on a free, would be a very good deal indeed.
The Reds are in pole position according to Italian reports, as Diakite is not keen to sign for Lazio' s rivals Roma in fear of a backlash from fans.
